Hidden tracking device?
I recently rented a Ford Explorer from Hertz at LAX and I noticed a small black plastic device with a cable connected to it between the windshield and the rearview mirror. To me it looked like a GPS antenna, but since the Explorer did not have Neverlost I was wondering whether there was a hidden tracking device in that truck.
Does anyone know something about this?
Would Hertz just activate it when the vehicle was stolen or do they regularly monitor location of the car? e.g. if it was illegally driven into Mexico?
or is it something entirely different?

No, it's probably the power for the electrochromatic (self-dimming) inside rearview mirror. Some autos also have the outside temp/compass display built into the rearview mirror.

<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">My last Explorers had satellite radios. Perhaps it's part of that?</font>
