We have actually now talked at length about this, and have managed to get a reasonable (in our view) quote for a Cadillac STS or similar, which whilst it is 50% more, I think will give us a much more enjoable drive over the 1,500+ miles

Just so you know, the choices in this category often include the Town Car, DHS and STS. Of these hope for one of the latter two, the Town Car I find horrible to drive and really uncomfortable.
