Maui School System

Aloha,

Mahalo to everyone who responded to my "Moving to Maui" thread - it was really helpful!! I have applied through the Maui Education Department, and have an interview in October with a recruiter in San Francisco - I am very excited!! I currently teach 1st grade, and obviously want to teach in Maui when my fiance and I move there in July 2008.

I have heard mixed reviews about the public and private schools in Maui. I have heard that many of the public schools are not good...is that true?? Are there certain areas of Maui that are better than others with regards to public schools?? Could you recommend any schools to try to teach in??

I have no experience with private schools, but many have told me to try to get a job in one. What are the private schools like, and how religious are they? I was raised Catholic, but I just can't see myself being a hardcore religious teacher, and was wondering if there were any private schools that were more "laid back" with all the religious stuff.

What are your experiences with the school systems?? Any recommendations and insights would be greatly appreciated!

Mahalo and Aloha!

As to private schools, on Maui there are few. Hawaii has done an incredible job at underfunding our public educational system that we have one of the highest percentages of children attending private institutions than public across the nation. I can't comment on the "better" public schools in Maui and hope that a local Maui resident will chime in here, but as to private schools, there are the following listed at this website: http://www.hais.org/school_directory.htm

I'm afraid I can't attest to the level of religion that's played out in the Maui private schools. You might look into teaching at Kamehameha School's Maui campus. Although KS has a native Hawaiian "preference" admission policy, there is no similar restriction for its teachers. I've heard some great stuff about KS from current and former faculty.

Find one that's air-conditioned, or upcountry. It's hot on the beach these days! (Kihei, Kahului, and Lahaina)
