We are looking at jumping from Kauai to one of the islands during our honeymoon Sept 16 or 17 to just spend the day. Any suggestions on which island, what to do and what airline to use? Thanks.

Going anywhere from here (even Oahu), is somewhat exhausting and quite time consuming, between the airports and security, and waiting and flying, car rental p/u and d/o, etc. That is especially true from Friday through Monday, which are the busiest airport days.

Then there is so much to do here and so much varied beauty. I'd suggest just doing something different here. Unless you're spending a month or more, I really don't think you can get bored. Plan a trip to a different island again soon. Just my thoughts.

How long are you staying again?

Me three. And unless you go to Oahu, it's usually a four leg trip to and from another island.

If you really want to go to another island, however, a suggestion would be a trip to Pearl Harbor. My nephew and his wife took a day trip to do this just to see the Arizona Memorial. However, they were on Kauai for two weeks and went, not because they were bored, but it was something they really wanted to do.

With Ultimate Kauai, a car and a plan (thanks to current and post contributors here), should a week in Kauai be enough to see most attractions, plus soak in 'island time'?

I've been warned that Kauai is relatively boring compared to other islands, but we are hoping to have so much to see, that every day will be an adventure.

We're here 24/7 and don't get bored. I'm not sure if that is saying something about us or about Kaua'i? We generally only get off-island about once a month to be of service to senior family.

It is definitely a slower pace, but one we love and one that is easy to get accustomed to. We grew up in cities and don't miss them.

jtkauai , will we be able to experience most of the better Kauai attractions/experiences in a week?

Obviously, from recent news and comments here, Heli tours are off our list, but everything else is on it.
I'm thinking that we will familiarise ourselves with LIH and surrounds (and maybe the Poipu/beach areas) the first day, then tour daily from Waimea up to the Princeville areas.

Should I look for old advice threads by searching 'week+Kauai'?
does it make sense to try to cover Kauai over a week by starting west and working our way around to the north?

I think that in a week you can have an experience that will leave you with a feeling of the island. Perhaps that is done best by not trying to see and do everything, but more by squeezing each moment and each activity that you choose. And having lots of down time, which is intrinsic to the quality of life here.

Trying to put myself in your shoes (which I probably should not try to do), I'd go up to the north shore at least twice. One time to drive around, stopping at the lighthouse then Tunnels, Haena, Ke'e at the end of the road, Lumahai and Anini, as time permits. For those you miss, stop at them the next time you drive north, as well as returning to favorites from the previous day. These are all fabulous, each in its own way.

South shore. Perhaps one day head to the Poipu area beaches, including Mahalepu for sure (dirt road beyond Hyatt).

Another day, head for the west side (stop at Salt Pond beach for a swim), and go up to Waimea Cyn and Koke'e park. Go all the way to the end of the road in Koke'e and walk around for views even if you don't hike.

Hiking? There are lots of choices here, but favorites of ours include sleeping giant (right in Kapa'a), the trail that starts at Ke'e, and any of the trails in Koke'e.

Anyway, that's all that is coming to mind at the moment (sorry, I'm running tired this evening). There's a ton more to do, most of which in my mind then depends on your personal interests. But the above is a good start for virtually anyone.

Oh yeah, remember to not stress too much about food, restaurants, reservations. Just "catch as catch can." You won't have missed anything.

Final note. Take in as many sunsets as possible at various beaches.
