Extra Hours in Lihue

We fly out of Lihue in a few weeks. Our friend, who has the rental car, leaves at 1 PM and our flight is not until 10 PM. We will be carless, and rather then stay in the airport terminal for several hours, we would like to wander around Lihue.

Given the location of the airport, can anybody make some suggestions of walkable sights to see or restaurants to eat at? We are comfortable walking 2 miles, more if the sight is great.

Many Thanks!

Why not rent a car for the day? Try islandair's portal. Good deals.

Otherwise, walking - you could get to Walmart, Hilo Hattie's, maybe the Marriott (really not that close). Generally, the walking idea won't work.

Or take the Marriott shuttle to the hotel and walk around and eat there. There's also a beach there.

That's all that comes to mind. Suggest you rent a car for the day and have fun.

I'll (as usual) tag on to JT's suggestion.

Take the shuttle to the Marriott. From there you can walk all around Nawiliwili (many shops, eats and a decent beach).

If you get bored there, walk towards the cruise ship pier (there's now a ship in nearly every day). From there you can catch shuttles to Hilo Hatties and K-Mart which is at Kuku'i Grove the main shopping center for Lihu'e.

Having done both you will have seen about all there is to see in Lihu'e town.

No where in Lihu'e are you more than a 5 minute car ride from the airport. Worse come to worse, stick out a thumb. Use some common sense, don't jump in with anybody who makes you even the slightest bit nervous.
