Anyone in Hilo this weekend?

Want to go up Mauna Kea, but I'm not old enough to rent a 4WD. If anyone is going to be in Hilo and is planning to go up Mauna Kea and wouldn't mind a stranger tagging along, please reply. I'm willing to pay for the petrol.

Totally bummed that I wasn't able to rent a 4WD. I might rent a compact. Can you take a compact to Akaka Falls? I couldn't find any information about it.

Any advice welcome!! I'll be staying at Arnotts.

Cheers,
Cat.

Did you try Harpers? I don't know their age policies, but they are the only company on the island that allows vehicles on Saddle Road/Mauna Kea summit road.

A compact is fine to Akaka Falls. It's a state park, there's a small parking lot at the park (where the path to both falls begins). If the parking lot is full you'll have to pull off to the side of the road.

Be sure to stop at Mr. Ed's Bakery in Honomu on your way back from Akaka Falls.

Have you considered a tour up Mauna Kea. That way you wouldn't need to rent a 4WD.

FWIW, a long time ago my father and I went up Mauna Kea with his Caddie... Didn't think we would make it.

There's a tour to Mauna Kea with Arnotts, but it's on Monday. They don't get back till around 11pm and my flight leaves around 7pm. I've emailed them to ask if they do it any other time, but I doubt it.

Looked through most of the car rental places... and they won't rent you 4WD's for under 25's even if you pay extra.

Oh well. It just means that I'll have to go again after my 25th birthday.

Can't wait till I get there. Want to go to the farmers market and buy lots of fruit and veges. Especially if they have longan and if it's cheaper than the ones in Honolulu!!

Thanks for your help folks.

Just remember that you can't take any of that wonderful fruit you get at the Saturday Hilo Farmers Market back to the mainland

Enjoy your time here
