Where to start?????
Ok.... never been to Hawaii before and my wife wants to make a trip. Award travel, high/low season, fares/hotel cost, whatever aside:
(and if any of these questions are answered anywhere else, please send pointers!)
When is the best time to visit Hawaii for "bang-for-buck" ratio?
What should we intentionally miss..... what should we not miss?
Where should we go/stay? Where should we not go/stay??
My wife and I are into seeing and exploring. Not big on basking in the hottest weather available to get the richest tropi-tone tan we can find. We love gardens, we want to do the requisite helicopter tour, and as a photographer I want to see anything unusual or different (not sunsets and palm-trees, but I love ruins, temples, delapidated gorp, or anything interesting and different, and so-called bad weather isn't a stopper for me).
Pointers? Suggestions?
Thanks much,
D.

I'd think the first step here is to decide which island to visit. Kauai, Oahu, Maui or the Big Island? If you use the search feature of this board and enter in Kauai, Oahu, Maui, Big Island as your search terms independently, you'll find some good suggestions as to which island offers what and which might suit you better. You'll also find pointers as to what activities should be recommended. I'd suggest you start by reading the posts that are listed on our Guide first and then go from there. Best of luck to you.

The best part about visiting an island is, it doesn't matter where you start - you'll eventually come full circle
Seriously, welcome to FlyerTalk and please do take a look at the threads that slippahs and a bunch of other hulpful members have taken the time to create - I'll bet they answer the majority of your questions. Feel free to post any additional ones...

As suggested, you'll I'm sure start doing some research - Maui, the Big Island of Hawaii and Kauai are ones you'll probably want to read about the most based on your posted interests. I don't know how long your visit will be, but perhaps you can fit two islands in.
To your question of best time to go for lowest cost, avoid summer, the winter holidays and spring break periods. For lowest crowds, the first week of school (usually last week of August and first week of Septemeber) are great times to go as is election week, especially this year as it's a biggie (be sure to vote absentee though). Corporations almost never schedule conventions during elections.
