Do I need a car while at HHV?
Had a few questions:
1) Does one need a car when staying at the HHV?
2) Any good tips on how to get car counters in Waikiki if you can't get a good rate at airport?
3) Where are the cheap stores to purchase incidentals located? Costco, Kmart? There used to be a Costco out by the Aloha stadium as well as a Crazy T-shirt factory are they both still there?
4) Any tips on restaurants for families with small kids.
Thanks.

1.) Car - I normally would say it's optional, but because it sounds like you a travelling with little ones, you might need one to store the car seats/strollers. I am assuming (and hoping) you'll want to do a bit of sightseeing and go out of Waikiki. Just remember, Honolulu has an excellent mass transit system, TheBus that has stops convenient to the HHV. Might work for short trips. Parking can be a challenge in Waikiki.

2.) Good rates for car rentals - perhaps a Priceline bid?

3. Cheap stores - In the HHV and about every other coconut tree in Waikiki is an ABC Store. There are also many shops in the HHV and in Waikiki; a large concentration are in the International Marketplace. Ala Moana Center also has nice stores. The Costco by Salt Lake is closed. If you do a "Costco" search on this topic, you wil find a recent discussion on the various Costco locations.
4. Restaurants that are kid-friendly. I'll have to think on this, but the Wailana Coffee House across the street from the HHV is a good option for relatively inexpensive meals...
Hope this helps...

There are some extremely savvy and knowledgeable The Bus riders at the Hawaii discussion board on about.com

Just remember that if you do plan to use TheBus (it's one word, don't ask), allow yourself plenty of time to travel from place to place. As good as the transportation system might be, it can sometimes take a while waiting for the bus. This is not such a problem for the Waikiki #19, #20 and #8 routes, but can be for any other routes you might take.

I've used PL for all my recent HI car rental bookings, can't be beat IMO (especially for convertibles/luxury cars).
But if you will only need a car for a day or two, PL will not save you that much $.
