Was wondering if it is posssible to upgrade from a coach award ticket to first class paying or using additional mileage?

I got upgrade to first class coupons as a new HA member. The cost is $45 per segment.

I think you can use miles, perhaps even from a partner like NWA or UA.

Just got back from HNL, took the nonstops both ways on award tickets from AA. The first class cabin looked very lame. You can upgrade at the gate for $400/two tickets each way. Definitely not worth it.

I have a question about up-grading on Hawaiian.....Do you have to wait till you get to the gate? Or can you do this earlier? Once at the gate, I would think that all the 1st class seats are gone, especially during busy months??? I'm a new Hawaiian FF too. Thanks for any help on this.
