I don't remember exactly when this happened - it was a few years ago. Many of the passengers were able to find hotels or were taken home by airport workers. After this happened the state now expects that the airport must stay open if something like this happens again. So no need for anyone to worry.

thanks for the info, alanwar!
it didnt seem "right" the terminal would close -- (if i am not mistaken, there aren't even any doors for entry to the ticketing area)...but stranded by car companies has happened more than once.

As for the red-eyes getting cancelled. Almost never happens.
Both of the UA SFO & LAX and the single AA LAX inbound aircraft arrive mid afternoon and sit on the tarmac for ~ 6 hours which give plenty of time to deal with any minor maintanance, and even to reroute folks to other flights in the event of major trouble.
Only if the plane has a newly found problem at departure, or in the event of a crew illness (captain for example) will the red eye be scrubbed. Happens once or twice a year. Agreed a terrible end to vacation, but also a very rare event.
