Does HA allow sponsored upgrades?
UA and other airlines allow someone to upgrade another traveler's ticket even if they are not traveling on the same flight(s).

Does such a concept exist on HA? And if so what is the mechanism to do this? (Web? Call? Pray?)

current target flight seems wiiiide open, it's showing

With miles, yes. Not with plat certificates. Have to call in.

I've also had success live chatting on HA's website and applying a mileage upgrade.
