Island Air drops JHM

Just heard through the rumor mill that Island Air is dropping Kapalua - and it appears as though you can no longer book a seat starting June 1st out of there.

This leaves Mokulele as the sole carrier serving JHM.

Interesting... let's hope Ohana by Hawaiian makes JHM one of their launch cities in addition to MKK and LNY.

I don't think Ohana by Hawaiian will be able to service JHM with their ATR42-500.

The ATR42-500 needs a minimum 3,248 ft for take-off and a minimum of 3,412 ft for landing. JHM's sole runway is only 3,000 ft long. This would make the runway too short for this type of aircraft.

It looks like Mokulele will now be the only carrier to serve JHM.

It looks like you are right. Per the Island Air websites time table JHM is no longer being served after June 1st. See link below...

Just had all my records past June moved to OGG. I called the station and they are moving all the flights to OGG.

I honestly don't see the airport staying open unless Mokulele or HA decide to ramp up service and codeshare with UA.

Wirelessly posted (iPhone-ETOPS: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 6_1_2 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/536.26 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/6.0 Mobile/10B146 Safari/8536.25)

This is disappointing. I've done Hnl-OGG/JHM-hnl trips before with a oneway car rental. Saves quite a bit of time. Not to forget the great 10k award availability for weekend hops to West Maui.

Completely agree. I'm in Kapalua at the moment on just such a weekend hop and I've done the trip with a one-way rental as well. Definitely a dispapointment.

KHON is reporting that OGG starts April 15 and JHM ends May 31.

Too bad. I would imagine it is expensive to run an airport with so few flights, but it is a nice little airport to use. It is a great option for going to West Maui.

Sounds like this is happening because their new planes can't land on the runway, and they are phasing out the Dash 8s. Didn't know they were getting rid of all of the Dash 8s, but I haven't been following WP.

How many flights does Mokulele have a day to JHM?

Now they just need to codeshare with UA.

I think he was talking about Mokulele, which will now be the only airline at JHM.

The problem with Mokulele is they are running the small 12 passenger props with very little luggage space. Not good at all for mainland to HNL to West Maui connections. A bigger concern is what this will do for the West maui tourism industry. Will the car rentals stay open at JHM? And what about the loss of a "life line" out when the Pali is closed ( as it frequently is). Mayor Arakawa, this issue needs immediate attention.
