As a former airline employee, the above 2 points are correct. You will not be able to have your luggage "short-checked". Your return reservation will be automatically cancelled. There is no way around this.

What, no stopover allowed?

It's been a decade since I worked for a HNL-based dot-com with "tickets" in its name, but... I thought you were allowed a stopover in one direction. So Home-HNL, HNL-OGG, OGG-HNL-Home should be pretty similar to Home-HNL-OGG, OGG-HNL-Home, shouldn't it?
