All World's Resort, Palm Springs

Trip Report - February 2005

The All World's Resort, Palm Springs is owned by the film studio of the same name, and many of the rooms have been used in their shoots in the past.

Situated in Warm Sands, opposite InnExile and nearby Vista Grande, the resort rates highly on cruise factor, but is also friendly and has some of the best rooms available in the non-luxury price bracket.

I first stayed here three years ago when the property had been recently purchased and renamed. It was going though a renovation, which amalgamated three smaller resorts into one.

As a consequence there are three of everything - three hot tubs at varying temperatures to suite your needs, and three large swimming pools, all of which are sparklingly clean.

The resorts - one of which is called The 550, renowned as a "Bear Resort" - are linked by a "nature walk" featuring bamboo hedges, a waterfall, sling, horse saddle and Japanese garden, as well as video screens throughout your perambulation.

There is an additional fourth resort, called "Another World", which is part of the complex but has private secure access to residents only, although they can come into the main complex if they wish.

This Another World is a spectacular private villa with a great luxurious pool, and six en suite rooms, all decorated to the highest standards, themed along the lines of the Marilyn Monroe Suite, Liberace Suite etc. Featuring flat screen TVs, candelabras and great bathrooms, they have the decadence to match. With rooms starting at $150/night this would be a great place to hire out with your friends for a weekend celebration.

Back to the main property. The central steam room is sizeable and clean, with showers adjacent for the day pass clientele. A dry sauna is also available.

In addition, a day room, where continental breakfast and complimentary evening cheese and wine is situated in the main palm court. This room is well appointed, with air conditioning, a fireplace and large leather sofas and chairs as well as a big screen TV and a substantial All World's Studio video/DVD collection. Up to three videos at any one time per room can be selected, free of charge, and signed out from the front desk.

Breakfast was adequate with a selection of apple, orange, grapefruit juices, cereals, muffins, yogurt and bagels with cream cheese. A plentiful supply of fruit is available throughout the day, but with no on site eateries you are well advised to keep a few yogurts etc for later!

Staff were helpful and friendly, and guests are the usual mixture of young and older you find in palm springs, but generally early thirties was predominant during my stay.

The best feature of this resort is the rooms; over 80% of rooms have now been modernised, and I noticed improvements to the rooms restored earlier on in the process, whcih now have tiled floors rather than carpet (which was getting tired on my last visit).

Some have four poster beds, fireplaces, jacuzzi spa baths, all have great bedding and sheets and lovely lamps and comfy soft pillows. There are many styles of room, so best to call ahead and enquire before you stay.

In room cosmetics are sandalwood scented. Bring your own!

TVs feature both DVD and video players, there are three channels of "gay entertainment" which runs on a loop, and is changed about twice a day. Interestingly, three other channels show security cameras, so you can see which of the pools is busiest and also who is arriving into the property, and this voyeuristic potential is rather fun, as well as being handy at night time, when the place hots up (usually after 2am)!

Each room has coffee making facilities, a microwave, fridge and plenty of mugs and cups, as well as a free bottle of water every day (the local water is drinkable, but has some sediment in it).

Phone calls are expensive, with even freephone being charged a flat fee and then time, so avoid calling home. Net access is by phone line, and therefore pricey. In addition there appears to be only one or two lines and so front desk staff can get stressed of you tie up the line for long periods. WIFI equipment was delivered a few weeks ago "but no-one has been to connect it" accordingly to the front desk. I emailed reservations twice before I arrived, and neither appeared to have been received, so best to call rather than rely on email. It's like a 1990s net experience!

Some of this is down to the fatct that the resort is in escrow, and new owners are liely to take over next month, with the same branding and name apparently, though personally I think this is a big risk for All Worlds Video, who could expose themselves to brand contamination should standards slip.

This was my third stay and it exceeded expectations, as ever. I will return, as staff and guests are friendly and helpful. Rooms are scrupulously cleaned every day. The phone/net issue is a bugbear, but on the other hand quite nice to zone out for a few days and just read and relax; that's why we go to Palm Springs anyway.

I was a little annoyed that on this stay the complimentary Saturday BBQ held in the Palm Court was cancelled due to poor weather (the day before; it was fine on Saturday) but after I made a fuss Roberto the camp as anything housekeeping director (more like Julie the cruise director if you ask me....!) did product some chips/crisps "and they're BBQ flavour, honey! ".

Do ensure you get one of the many newly renovated rooms if that is important to you - unrenovated ones go for $75/night and I paid $125 for room 30, which is my favourite as it's close to the main palm court pool, and has a huge window in the bathroom overlooking the lawn so you can keep an eye out for the view while having your shower.

That was my third stay and I will be back.

Watch this space for news of the new owners and their plans!

I visited once during the last PSP do, and maybe i was missing something, but it just didn't seem all that clean. I mean physically the whole cement area looked like it needed a good washing down.

I did see two porn stars there, Jason someone and something Hawke I think (not Ethan Hawke unfortunately). I guess they were just laying and working out while in town. Very friendly and said hi to me (that's it!!!)

I spent a weekend at All World's Resort in October 2003 and I second apudme's comments. I liked the place a lot, however I found it a bit pricey considering the tiny room I got. On the other hand, the size of the room didn't really matter 'cause I didn't spend much time in there.

I've been to quite a few gay resorts in PSP and I liked the All World's best so far. It isn't sleazy like some other places, but it isn't boring (i.e. non-cruisy) either.

Beyond Bad

Did reviewer "krug" get suspended because it's painfully obvious the person has some affiliation with All Worlds Resort? Does he think we're that dumb? I got kicked out of this place in the middle of the night for the high crime of leaving my car in one of four or five unoccupied "No Parking" spaces. Unbelievably, the owner/manage named Austin banged on my door and told me he was "cutting my vacation short" as though he were king and I was a serf. I have NEVER EVER been treated so rudely by a business. I have a hard time believing it happened. I will NEVER EVER go back, and I cannot say it any more simply than STAY AWAY!

What part of "No Parking" didn't you understand?

The problem with many of these PSP resorts is that there is often not enough parking spaces if the property is "full". If there weren't any other parking spaces around then the treatment by the staff is unacceptable - there are a couple of "no parking" spaces at Santiago (where we usually stay also) but if there is no other spaces available (and street parking isn't really an alternative for many of these resorts), the to the All World's staff. But if there were plenty of other spaces around, then the poster is wrong to park in one of those spaces.

Understood, but....

I'll veer off topic to say that as a member of my condo board, I regularly deal with furious people whose cars have been towed from "unoccupied" "No Parking" spaces. In our case the spaces are located directly in front of our Trash/Recycle station, which is landscaped in a way that what it hides is not obvious. Yet the truck comes to empty the bins about 5 am, and if a car is blocking the "unoccupied" spaces, we have to pay for two calls instead of one. I'll give you the guy was rude, but I can certainly understand his frustration. Been there, done that.
