I'll be in MUC end of Dec. Looking forward to it! This thread has been a help.
Years ago when I last visited, there was a cafe in Marienplatz that was upstairs, directly across from the glockenspiel. Does anyone know if this place still exists? I wouldn't mind trying to make a reservation for oh, 10h50 :D if I can. Their website is: http://www.cafe-glockenspiel.de/ They don't appear to have an English version of the site though. However, you can certainly figure out their hours, etc. by reviewing the website. Regards |
Great! Thanks scubadu - much appreciated! ^

On the 11th, 14th and 18th December: At the Bayerische Staatsoper, the outstanding new production of Donizetti's L'Elisir d'Amore, with a stellar cast:

Saw this quote from a trip report on the Mandarin Oriental hotel which olafman had written up.

We had booked dinner at one of my favorite restaurant in Munich, Rusticana. They serve the best ribs I’ve ever eaten.
This thread is a couple years old and I'm sure most of the recommendations still hold, any new places to consider that haven't been mentioned? Mrs Sweet Willie does like German food but not near as much as I do, so any non-German/Bavarian recommedations would be appreciated to give her a dining/lunch 'break'. -

Well. We're here.:)
Thank you all for the great recommendations! The concierge is gonna be busy making reservations for us I think ;) - thanks in advance |
Munich eats
Yes, I love Rusticana. It's a great place. BEST ribs I've ever had and I've eaten them all over the south of the USA.
Also for non-German food, try Vinh, great Vietnamese food not far from center. On the weekend the owner MIGHT do some magic for you. He's a total hoot! For German fare, I always take my out-of-towners to the Ratskeller on Marienplatz. I think the food is very good and the clientele is mostly Bavarians! Be sure to try the cheesy spetzle. For nice fresh food or a great burger try, Cosmo Grill. It's Germany's version of delicious fast food. Also there is a nice noodle bar/sushi place next to the Apple Store off of Marienplatz. I'm not sure what the name is but I would often stop by and grab a bowl of udon noodles on a cold Muenchen day. If you can get out of town, a trip to Kloser Andechs is a true local experience. The local monks make beer and then the restaurant serves typical Bavarian fare. It's about a 45 minute drive from the center past Lake Starnberg. Unfortuntately, public transport is an option using the S5. A rental car is a nice option for this drive. On Sundays they have local oom-pah-pah bands playing in the beer garden. It's a great experience. I have many more recommendations. Just ask me what kind of food you'd like to eat. |

BTW, for any Flyertalkers that might be in München on Sat Nov 26, there will be a Flyertalk dinner: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/commu...ler-stubn.html - |
Ate at Wirsthaus in der Au, down the hill from Hilton Munich City. Outstanding food and nice atmosphere. Packed with locals and otherwise completely reserved, but they found us two spots.

New Year's with Kids
We will be in Munich on New Year's Eve. We will have our twelve year old son with us--staying in Hilton Munich City. Any suggestions--he would also be happy staying in and eating room service so adult suggestions are also welcome.

*During the day for food or a beer or two, never done anything special at night in Munich. http://www.augustiner-restaurant.com...rhalle_en.html |
Are there any 'fine dining' suggestions? I am meeting a friend late tomorrow night and we will probably go to the Hofbrauhaus (past my bedtime :)), but I'd love to have a really great meal together on Tuesday night German/Bayerisch would be great, but I'm flexible. Here in the Allgau the food has been OK to mediocre the last few days, but even the best food (it was grilled veal with mushroom sauce and hause-made Spatzli) could have done with a couple of tablespoons less salt! :).
Thanks Dr. PITUK |
If you want something that is more 'fine dining'-oriented but still with a local touch in Munich, try the 'Schuhbecks'. It is located at Platzl 6+8 in Munich.

I enjoy Nürnberger Bratwurst Glöckl at the SE corner of Frauenkirche, between Augustiner am Dom and Andechs am Dom. If you want a quick beer, there is a window around the corner (left side looking at the place) to get a draft out of a wooden barrel.

Has anyone tried the Palais Keller at the Bayerischer Hof?
Parameters: Arriving 625p from Innsbruck at the Hbf. Have a 9p departure back out of the Hbf and looking for a place with Bavarian food (will be eating too much Austrian food (pretty much the same as Bavarian?) the 2 weeks before and will be having a week of Italian food). |
