18 Hours in Munich

I have 18 hours to myself on a Saturday night in Munich.

I'm traveling alone, staying at the Marriott Munich (on Berliner Strasse). Any suggestions for a first-timer to enjoy Saturday night sites?

Looking for a good people-watching area to walk around and with a not too fancy place to eat dinner.

There's a lot of shops/restaurants/etc around the Münchner Freiheit plaza (in the Schwabing district).

From the Marriott, if you like walking and the weather is good, it's walkable, or you could take the U-Bahn (U6) one stop down to the station of the same name.

(Note: the Münchner Freiheit station is being rebuilt and there are periodic closures - the MVV site says until November 23rd):

The Schwabing district is good as is the area around the Marienplatz and Viktualienmarkt. Lots of fancy AND not too fancy places to eat. Great for people watching.

If you have time, you should visit the BMW world. ^

Agreed with Gre - the Christmas markets are awesome and should open up right around Dec. 1. I can already taste the glhwein!

Too bad, by my calculations the markets should open on 11/28 (Friday before the 4th Sunday before Christmas).

I did some Mileage Runs to MUC last year, and the thread I started evolved into a life of its own. You may want to check it out:

I second the suggestions for BMW World, Marienplatz, etc. Too bad you'll be missing the Christmas Markets. You may also want to see what shows/performances will be happening, there's a few theaters there.

Depending on the time of day, a trip out to Dachau would be worthwhile. A couple of years ago I took an English language tour out to the camp on a Sunday afternoon. The tour began right at the Marienplatz.
