FRA Scanners

I've connected through FRA at least a half a dozen times recently and have had the scanner buzz when walking through the security checkpoint. This was after passing through security at various European airports 2-3 hours prior, with never a buzz. Note that I make sure there's nothing remotely metallic on my person, including shoes/jewelry/coins etc.

This is certainly not a big deal, but I am wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience at FRA.

There are even differences between scanners in Frankfurt. When I fly to the UK, I go to through the primary security check (with my belt still on) and no buzz, then at secondary security they make me take of my belt and the scanner will buzz. No you would think that this might be due to tightened security for UK flights, but I even had it the other way around.

I guess it just depends on how the scanners are calibrated.

Maybe you are so lucky, that Mr. Random thinks, you are the right person for the special inspection.

I have the same. Finally I discovered that it's a matter of shoes - at some airports they 'make noise', and at some they don't. I think it's just a matter of sensivity of the scanners.

One pair of my "leisure" shoes (very normal shoes, almost a bit like trainers but with leather on top) beeps sometimes. At ZRH they showed me on the xray screen that there is a big long metal strip in the sole!

The metal detectors at FRA are equipped with a "random beep" feature. Some percentage of people where the detector senses no metal gets beeped anyway for a more thorough check.

I once went through a metal detector at FRA while wearing flip-flops, shorts and a t-shirt, with absolutely no metal on my person except the iron in the steak I had for lunch. Seeing my look of utter disbelief, the security guy explained that I was probably a random selectee.

Mr. Random is a very close friend to me.
I always meet him at the airport.
Especially my Laptop loves to get an EGIS at FRA! (At least they clean the dust off!)

Yes, I get the dust scanning treatment about every second time at the FCT. I've never gotten it at any other airport in Germany or Austria. (but quite often in the US or UK)

I thought it was only me who made the scanners at FRA go beep every time, regardless of how little metal there is on me. My shoes always have to go through the xray machine too.

Only once have I managed to get though without it going beep.

Hello

The random beep is a long beep and has another lower pitch than the short metal beep beep beep. That is how you can distinguish the two. By the way, Mr. Random is also a very close friend of mine. Have him nearly 75%.

Cheers

Since this is a pure FRA airport thread with no relevance to Miles & More (Lufthansa, Austrian, Swiss, and other partners) I'm moving this to the Germany forum as per agreed convention.

Put me in the "always beep at FRA and never anywhere else" column as well. And, my travel shoes do NOT have any metal inserts, chosen carefully for just that feature.

I've been pulled in at FRA for the secondary after the beep. I have an ankle and leg full of stainless steel pins and plates but when they wanded my leg and ankle at close range the beeper didn't sound. It was the lace eyelets of my Timberland boots that were the problem.
