My wife and I have a 24 hour lay over at FRA on 23 June (arrive 0530 on Luft, depart at 0730 for Rome the next day).
Staying at the Airport and want to know what to do for the day (train into the city, ICE trip, etc). I have seen 4 hour, quick ICE trips, etc, but no RON's for 24+ hours.
Any thoughts?

What types of activities do you and your wife enjoy?
I recently spent a quick weekend in FRA and decided to spend the time in Mainz. (Arrived 9AM, departed 8AM next day). The train ride to Mainz hbf is quick (30 min?) and I spent the day checking out a few of the museums, going through the market, taking a walking tour and then heading out in the Altstadt for the evening. I took the early morning train back to FRA and had no problems at all.

I see you are a Hilton Diamond. So maybe you should get a room for the night.
Check out the rates at the two Hilton Hotels in Mainz. The S-Bahn needs between 20 to 30 minutes from Frankfurt Airport to Mainz Main Station. Mainz has a nice old roman style cathedral, a nice old town, the Gutenberg Book printing museum which has a Gutenberg Bible on display, nice restaurants, a nice river promenade.
Alternative is Frankfurt. There is a Hilton which is almost downtown. Frankfurt has a lot of Museums, across the main is Sachsenhausen with a lot of traditional regional restaurants, nice shopping areas, the old town hall.

We have it down to either Mainz or Cologne. I saw that the ICE gets you to Cologne in under an hour and leaves from FRA. Roundtrip is less than $100.
From what I have seen, it appears Cologne is the better use of time for someone like my wife who has never been to Germany.
Thanks for the advice.

I'll second the Cologne idea. If you stay at the Hilton in Cologne, it is about a three minute walk from the main train station, and very close to the cathedral and the shopping district. The ICE train will go direct from the FRA airport train station to Cologne Hbf. Cologne has a little more 'culture' in my opinion, than Frankfurt does.Originally Posted by tdncz

Thank you all for the advice.
Plan is to fly into FRA at 0530 (hopefully we can get SOME sleep on the "near flat" business class seats of the Luft AB 0330), store the bags at the train station, take the ICE to Cologne, return that night, pick up the bags and check into the IBIS FRA Airport (only 39 Euro! - why use 35K HH points).
Next morning we are off to Rome at 0730. I will be asking some Rome/Venice questions on that board in a few.
