Does anyone have any experience with renting from Auto Europe or Europe by Car? They are cheaper than the American companies, but obviously not worth it if it is more hassle in the end.
Any suggestions/advice/experience appreciated.
Thanks!

My choice is (in this ranking):
Sixt
Hertz
National
Budget
Europcar
Avis
Hertz is not that bad at all. They offer pretty good rates. The only downside is that you don't get that much upgrades compared to Sixt (at least this is my experience).
I have never heard of OPs rental agencys as well…

Hertz might be at the very end of my list of favourites because I never used them again after they tried to make me liable for damage that obviously occured after they received the car back and even had confirmed that the car was in perfect condition.
I prefer Sixt and National for the value for money and normally refrain from using Avis and Hertz.

I have rented from AutoEurope twice, the last time picking up in suburban Rome, turning in at the tough to get to office on the Arno in Florence. The product and services were as advertised and adequate without seeming to be a rip off. The cars can come from one of several agencies.

Hertz is OK
I have not encountered any problem with Hertz. I rented from Hertz in several Western European countries in the last few years. They gave me AAA discount, which is competitive. I frequently receive upgrades. Hertz generally has many locations in same city, and each office tends to operate hours that fit my schedule. I often pick up car in a city location and drop-off at airport or train stations to avoid another 20% tax (a rough number, since I am talking about Hertz in Europe). By doing it this way, for example, I save about EURO 97 for a 2-week rental in Frankfurt.

I rented from Auto Europe in Greece(4 times) and also in Italy(1 time), never had a problem. I do not need an auto when I visit Germany, so I can not tell you aboutb rental cars in that country
