....or do not return at Brandenburg gate but go through the gate into the part which used to be the free west, continue to the impressive parliament building (Reichstag), walk though the gouvernemt district, see the German "White house" (the Berliners call it "washing mashine"), cross the river and take the train back to the airport from the new shiny Main Station.
When starting your walk you should cross "Unter den Linden" before marching to Brandenburg Gate and continue on "Friedrichstraße" for two blocks, turn left and walk one block and you will reach "Gendarmenmarkt", one the most beautifully designed squares worldwide with a big theatre and two impressive churches.

I'll be in Berlin for a day shortly using SXF. I used to visit regularly on business, though that was when the Wall was still there, and I mainly used TXL so this thread is very interesting for me. I guess the info is still up to date?
One question: is there a 1-day travel pass for trains and buses, and does it include the Airport Express? Many thanks.

Just to be realistic here with time requirements. We suppose the incoming flight is not late by a minute and we suppose that he has to be there no more than 30 minutes before departure to Venice. If there are 4 hours between these two points on the timeline, he will have time to do the little walking tour suggested by Reindeerflame or Flying Lawyer.
To be on the safe side from the moment you touch down to the moment you get off the train at Friedrichstrasse I'd count 1h15min. To get back from the moment you take the train from FS to the departure terminal I'd count around the same. This includes some waiting for the train and orientation at the airport and the S-Bahn station. This leaves about 1.5 hours of walkaround time in Berlin.
If the premises in the first paragraph are not met, I wouldn't bother. Too stressful and too risky to miss the connecting flight.
