Rental car rate increases?

I travel to Germany about every six months and rent a car for about three weeks, usually from Sixt or Hertz. For my upcoming trip the rates are more than twice as high as for my last four visits. Is this a systematic increase or just bad luck when I was checking?

Well, there are many questions that affect the answer.

Is it a holiday priode ?
From where are you renting ? The concession charges at the aeroports likely have gone up, like everything else.

It is not for a special time and in a small city. I am going there each time at the same times. There was a peak during COVID times and now the rental rates are similar to that level again.

I made a reservation for an upcoming trip and the rates seemed “normal” or maybe even lower than expected. $250 for five days, at FRA.

Depends on from which outlet you rent. Sixt seems indeed to be more expensive than the previous years (I usually rent every other weekend for 70 EUR but now it is usually above 100 EUR, but now with unlimited kilometres, while last year is was 300 km per day, i.e. 900 km for the weekend). Hertz is more or less the same than last year with a slight increase for rentals during the week.

All rental agencies charge now (sometimes quite heavy) surcharges for oneway rentals or if you need to cross the border into another country.
