UK a virus variant area

From 20 December, the UK is once again a designated virus variant area. Entry from the UK is limited to German residents/citizens and those who may travel under an exemption.

Does traveling to Poland on a train count as transit?
Am I allowed to fly into Berlin?

Found this:
Transit travellers who are entering Germany and then immediately travel onward to another country do not have to register their entry online.

Is this related to travel from the UK to Poland by flying into Berlin and then take a train to Poland?

I think that was regarding transiting trough Germany via land.

Not sure how flight plus train would work.
Can't find information anywhere?

Unless your train ticket is ticketed in conjunction with your airline ticket (I'm thinking Lufthansa and their DB connections), you will be considered to be entering Germany. Therefore the virus variant country restrictions will apply when checking in with your airline.

Finally found a definition of a transit.

1. Transit
Persons who merely passed through a high-risk area or area of variants of concern without without stopping over are exempt from the obligation to register. Stopovers are stays which exceed the customary length of a necessary stop in order to take a break or refuel a vehicle, for instance; connection times at an airport are not deemed to constitute a stopover.

Example: A toilet break at a motorway service area is not a stopover. However, if you visit someone or spend several hours in a town on the way to your actual destination, you are stopping over.

The same applies to persons who are only in transit through and leaving the Federal Republic of Germany as quickly as possible to complete their transit journey.
So I should be good to go?

Maybe, assuming you are getting straight on a train to Poland from the airport. I'd have a ticket purchased in advance to show the airline/border police and be prepared for a grilling.

The UK Foreign Office is now reporting that from midnight tonight a negative PCR test is required to enter Germany from a virus variant area, though I can't find a German source for this at the moment. Lateral flow/antigen tests are no longer accepted.

For the record, this restriction on Great Britain and Northern Ireland travellers is to be lifted on 4 January 2022. This is also the case for 8 countries in southern Africa. The UK goes to High Risk group, but for those vaccinated there aren't major restrictions.
squawk, offerendum and notquiteaff like this.
