Suggestions for Silvester in Berlin
I'm attending a conference in Hamburg after Christmas and will be in Berlin for Silvester. I'm looking to avoid a repeat of last year's debacle where I found myself at the flat of a member of the Pirate Party being bored to tears while Dinner for One with Hungarian subtitles played on a old laptop with a defective SCSI output.
So...Silvester.
I'd like to be somewhere indoors. I'd also like to dress up a bit. Here in Alaska that means washing your Carhartts so I enjoy dressing-up up to and including black tie. And as much as I like pork byproducts, I'd like to avoid any err...sausage fests.
Music is nice. Being able to talk is also nice as my German is near fluent. Any and all advice appreciated!

I have not been in Berlin for Silvester so I can't recommend any place as such.
Which is why I never posted a reply.
But since no one else is answering and you are buellering us......
When I was in the Waldorf Astoria Berlin a few weeks ago, I noticed that they had some New Year Specials.
A 6 course dinner in Les Solistes with champagne in the Library on 15. floor at midnight.
Or a two night stay with the 6 course dinner included.
You would have a very good view of the fireworks from high up in the WA.
The link takes you to a page showing the restaurant options in the WA.
Look under 'specials', click the 'info' button, choose English and scroll down to the New Years offers.
These offers will certainly give you the opportunity to dress up.

Never celebrated Sylvester in Berlin, most exclusive party should be at the Adlon but I doubt tickets are available. I found this webpage with some recommondations. Many hotels seems to have a gala, also some nice restaurants. But I don`t know if you would have fun on your own.

I was going to suggest the Adlon as well. I think the hotels are your best bet, since places like the China Club and so on will have members' parties. You could try the more boutique hotels, like Das Stue, to see if they're putting anything on.
Last year sounds like it was a real disaster for you!
