Planning a possible stay in the Kaiserstuhl area at the end of November and looking for recommendations for a nice hotel, Gasthaus, etc. We plan on staying 2-3 nights. Would prefer to stay in that area rather than Freiburg.

There are plenty of villages in the Kaiserstuhl area, but it isn't clear from your post as to how you are getting about. Although there is a train track from Breisach through the Kaiserstuhl, it's not a very frequent service.

My recommendation is to consider BREISACH AM RHEIN, literally just on the border on the river Rhine opposite France. The Hotel Rheinblick (http://www.hotel-rheinblick.com/) is very nice in the centre of the town and has willing staff and a wide variety of dishes in the restaurant. Ask for a quiet room overlooking the back of the hotel ... OK so no view at all but when I stayed there, I was shocked how many locals used the road at the front as a speedway once darkness fell ... or enjoy the view and bring earplugs .. your choice!

I suggest you act quickly as accommodation here tends to fill up early as it's far enough to have space and travel daily to the French Christmas Markets in Colmar and Strasbourg .. and not as pricey as the hotels in these towns.

Thank you for your suggestion. I'm, also, considering Vogtsburg as there is a winery (Salwey) that I would like to visit.
