Hohenschwangau or Neuschwanstein? (although the former is far less touristy, the latter is the one usually requested by Americans) The website lists virtually all the travel options.

http://www.hohenschwangau.de/449.0.html

The A95 and then rural roads if driving. If you are going on a weekday traffic is not so bad, but on a weekend especially in holiday season the A95 has a long tailback for many kilometres, so the travel time can vary greatly.

There are also day bus tours; they leave from behind Karstadt department store near the train station but if your arrival is 9am then most will have departed I believe by then.

Where to stay I suppose depends on the flight the next day. The Kempinski is still a nice hotel, with excellent service, and MUC is an attraction in itself, but if the flight is anytime after early morning I would stay in the city to be able to absorb some local athmosphere.

Hohenschwangau & Neuschwanstein both tend to get crowded with the day tours from MUC. You would do well to plan your day in advance and buy tickets ahead of time so you don't waste time at the ticket centre when you arrive.

Neuschwanstein is the more famous of the two castles but personally I preferred Hohenschwangau. While both castles are essentially next to each other, oddly they are run by 2 different operators. There are no photos allowed in either castle. But of course, if you're discreet and don't use flash you can get away with a few souvenirs.

Driving from MUC to the castles is easy. Taking a bus with 50 other tourists is obviously straightforward if that's your thing.

As pointed out in the previous post, MUC is a very nice city with lots to see & do. I really enjoyed the tour of the Bayerische Staatsoper; it's without question the best opera house tour I've had. But even just wandering through the old city is very nice. And I was pleasantly surprised to find that the major beerhalls are not tourist traps at all. The food there and obviously, the beer as well, is all quite tasty and not terribly expensive. While I wouldn't say it's fine dining it is something I enjoyed doing and will readily do again. Other than that, there are the usual European cathedrals and churches that are all spectacular inside with great acoustics, there's the Rathaus at Marianplatz, the Viktualienmarkt, the Residenz ... heck that's just some of the stuff in the old town. There's plenty more to see & do in MUC!
