Question about "personal item"

I have a flight on 8/13 to Denver CO from Jacksonville FL and I'm trying to avoid the fees for carry-ons since I'm on a tight budget. I'll only be staying for 2 days so I just want to bring my MacBook and a t-shirt/shorts. I bought a simple Case Logic laptop sleeve that fits the dimensions for the personal item. Am I able to put my MacBook in there as well as a t-shirt and a pair of gym shorts. The sleeve has metal zippers and another compartment on the outside also with a metal zipper. I would rather just take a backpack which is a little bigger than the posted dimensions on the website and squish it but I don't want problems on the day of my flight. This is my first flight ever with Frontier and my first flight in general in the past 10 years.
Any responses is greatly appreciated.

honestly, with the way their op has been running lately - I would say good call in a less than daily market.

With that being said (for future reference for you and others), Frontier doesnt really enforce personal item sizes unless its so outrageous its clear it wont fit under the seat. Even then, once you get on the aircraft, you can easily stow your personal item in the overhead and the FAs could care less...do it every time I fly them with a slightly oversized backpack.

Every airline has negative reviews. I've flown Frontier probably 25 times in the past 6-7 years, and for the most part, their service has been fine. The savings are incredible, but you really do need to be flexible or have a back-up plan in case of any flight delays or cancellations. My trips are usually for no more than 5 days so I do the backpack thing every time--it's a good size backpack that fits 2 laptops, 5 days worth of clothes, plus some other stuff. It will fit under the seat, but like the other commenter said, its not a problem to place in the overhead bin once on board.
