Hey Frontier... A TTN-PHL connection idea

We are one of the new passengers out of TTN who appreciate your service, and even kinda love the Don Draper time travel back to a single-gated, old-school plane stair ramp-style airport. My son and I are from North Jersey so this doesn't directly pertain to us, but it would seem that your envisioning TTN as a Philly Metro airport could get a small but authentic boost if you coordinated with a livery service to provide shared van service for the 1.5 miles that separates SEPTA's West Trenton terminus from TTN. I noticed that service there is hourly, even on Sunday, and it would at least seem logistically uncomplicated for a local driver to be contracted by your passengers through your website at the time of booking a ticket for a fair fee that wouldn't cost Frontier anything. And now all of a sudden someone in Philadelphia metro on SEPTA can get an assured connection to TTN for aprx $18 ($10 SEPTA plus I understand that a cab ride is aprx $8 and a shared ride service for 1.5 miles surely can match or beat this.) Two added bonuses... by happy coincidence the West Trenton train becomes the PHL train after passing through Center City so someone coming into TTN can now connect to PHL within 90 minutes. A second bonus is that each of these passengers may replace a car-driving passenger on full flights and this could have a slight but significant effect on the overcrowded parking situation at TTN. For instance if TTN capacity is at say 103%, even a 1 or 2 % train/van population could help relieve stress on capacity. Another possibility... some of the West Trenton businesses, an 80 year old well-regarded family restaurant business by the train station, a pizza place, Dunkin Donuts, etc are close by and that perhaps they can help underwrite a van to the airport with a percentage of customer's purchase at their business... Just thinking outside the box...

So I throw this out there. A number of you travel a lot more than I do and have a better sense of practicality, so feel free to comment.

I think that the Town of Ewing's plan is that if Frontier works out, they will build a new terminal south of the runway, with a nearby "Town Square" type shopping center next to the airport and extend the rail line. But that is 5-6 years off at least.

Personally, I doubt they will get enough passengers that way to make it economical. It is a suburban airport; those who may lack wheels to get there, perhaps in center city Philly, are going to take mass transit to PHL.

I know around 5+ years ago NJ Transit looked at having the Raritan Valley line extended to meet SEPTA in West Trenton.... Apparently the track is preexisting but would still cost a fair chunk of change and it hasn't gotten past the drawing board. I agree it is hard to see where the volume of traffic into TTN can justify this kind of economic project and new rail connection. I do think Frontier can pick off some Philly traffic...perhaps North Philly and Bucks County. For instance my son and Ihave $58 one way fares...a direct flight to RDU coming up that was over $200 with USAirways from PHL at the time of booking (now that WN No longer flies nonstop). My sense is if Frontier promoted in a.modest way via their website a 1.5 mile reserve-in-advance shuttle service to and from TTN/West Trenton it would cost Frontier almost nothing if subcontracting with a livery service and it is something they can do right now to bring attention to TTN's semi.proximity to the Philly market.

Many Philly downtown dwellers have atleast one car, for weekend use, if not for commuting.

Philly is not like NY, where many from NY live without a car and can really get by without it.

Since there is no NJT service from West Trenton to Newark, it'd make more sense to have shuttle to Trenton Transit Center to capture NJ.

There is jitney service from ACY to AC Rail Line station. It costs $10 a ride, but the jitneys drop pax at the ACY casinos as well, so it's not just for airport to rail station. The distance is 13 miles.

The TTN airport to Trenton Transit Center (Amtrak) is 7 miles, and ILG airport to Wilmington Amtrak's is 8 miles.

Regarding Wilmington/ILG, for a pax, it makes more sense to rent a Budget car and do a one-way (from ILG to another Budget location), if one doesn't have a car. Most of Frontier's service for Wilmington is anyways during the week when Budget is open.

I like the OP's idea. It's simple and it fills a small-but-critical connectivity gap.

Since Frontier's service out of TTN is (for now) limited, you'd really only have a handful of SEPTA trains you'd have to meet. Personally, I'd dispense with the reservations and simply make it a scheduled service for a flat per-person fee. Frontier (or, ideally, the airport) guarantees the shuttle operator a minimum amount for each run. If cash fares exceed that, then Frontier or the airport is off the hook. The reason I think the airport should provide the revenue guarantee is that it would help ameliorate their parking shortage.

What I can't understand is why NJ Transit doesn't just do a very unobtrusive route change to one of their bus lines. There is already one line that literally drives right alongside the airport -- just have it do a quick turn into the terminal, and voila - you have transit connections to Trenton Transit Center and West Trenton SEPTA, and by extension to Philly, Newark, New York, etc.
