Last year I was almost 1000 miles short, I e-mailed a polite request to maintain Ascent and they did it. This year I'll be about 350 miles short, plan to ask again after the mileage from my last flight of the year posts. I learned on FT that if you are within 1K they will usually grant it.

Thanks for the anecdotal experience - indeed he called ER and said that the lady to which he spoke thought that they could take care of him. Very nice that they offer a bit of flexibility when it makes sense rather than 100% compliance to the rules regardless of logic, and one of the reasons that they continue to be my favorite airline.
