Call the ER award desk and advise you'd like to redeem an award for a family member. There should be no problem.

I asked them a week ago and they said I could send my mailman on a trip if I wanted!

The account holder merely has to provide the first and last name of the travelling passenger. It does not matter whom it is or the relationship of that person to the accound holder.
