Exclamation Please avoid Strasbourg and surrounding areas on April 3/4

I strongly advice everyone NOT to try to visit Strasbourg on April 3/4 2009. A NATO Summit of Heads of State and Government will be held in Baden-Baden and Kehl, Germany, and in Strasbourg, France.

The meetings will be chaired by the NATO Secretary General, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer. The President of the French Republic, Mr Nicolas Sarkozy, and the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Mrs Angela Merkel, will host the meetings. you cannot sign up on the FlyerTalk communitybuzz forum for this one.

as you probably know not only Heads of State will come to Strasbourg but also thousands of anti-nato-people. Chaos to be expected. Trains from Germany to France as well as from Switzerland to France / Germany may have limited schedules, highways will be closed as well as SXB airport.

The same for Baden-Baden. The city will be pretty much off limits for non-residents. The preparations will probably start at least a week before. So I would say that from March 26th to April 5th Strasbourg and Baden-Baden are nor fun to visit.

Before and after in theory should be okay but good luck getting a hotel. I would just pick another week to see Alsace, if possible...

They are actually going to close down some schools in SXB that friday. Luckily, my German class is on a Tuesday... I'm waiting to hear what they've decided for my children's school.

Just dreading it!

I just drove south from Wiesbaden to Karlsruhe and there were several police convoys heading to Baden-Baden/Kehl/Strasbourg Area.

Baden-Baden is divided in three zones. The inner zone is off-limit to everyone besides the participants of the NATO-summit. The middle zone is only accessible for people who live there and even they have to be escorted by police. The outer zone is open to the public but will be heavily controlled by police.

So I second chrissxb. Avoid the Strasbourg/Kehl/Baden-Baden Area this weekend.

Yes, it's the same zoning system in Strasbourg. A lot of police, military and barbed wire up, not to mention those noisy helicopters!

A lot of the public transport will be shut down and public buildings like schools and pools shut.

Well the French airforce base at Meyenheim - approx 15 km south of where I live - is quite literally buzzing!! Loads of different planes and helicopters to spot!! And the A35 northbound is closed from Selestat to general traffic ................

The summit will also entail restrictions on air traffic. The flight schedule for Friday 3 April shall remain unaffected.

However, Saturday 4 April no commercial flights will be authorised from 12-9:30pm, with the exception of flights AF 7766 Paris CDG – Strasbourg which arrives at 6pm and AF 7767 Strasbourg- Paris CDG which departs at 6:50pm.
