A friend has asked me for a recommendation--can you help? She is a first time traveler to Paris. She is looking for a hotel in the $200-$250 price range, boutique-like, located for a new traveler to Paris who will be visiting all the "sights". Of course she wants charm etc--well, as much as you can get for that price

In that range for a first-time traveler, I would recommend a hard look at the Hotel Le Madison:

Its location is just about unbeatable and it has plenty of charm.

L'Hotel is a wonderful boutique hotel on the Left Bank. Fantastic location, easy walk to the river, Notre Dame, Louvre and my other places. Very interesting neighborhood near the church at St. Germaine. Stayed there several times and the staff/management are friendly and helpful. The rooms are beautiful and luxurious and the design of the hotel is very interesting also with a central open space that goes from basement pool to the top of the hotel. Great place, recommend it very highly although it might be at the upper end of that price range or a bit above it.
