Another strike affecting air travel is to be expected on May 27th:
"Some 80 percent of flights to and from French airports will be cancelled on Tuesday as a result of a strike by air-traffic controllers, France's civil aviation authority DGAC said Friday." (from:
http://www.air-cosmos.com/afp.htm)
Sorry for those of you who planned to fly to (or via) France

jabez, it's a one-day strike, so you should be ok, perhaps a few delays as things get back into gear.

Here's the latest list of authorized flights for Tuesday the 27th of March from the French DGAC (the civil aviation authority), it's 20% of the normal total.

Looks my flight is green-lighted, so I'm off to New York.

Ciao!

But watch out, Monday and Tuesday June 2 and 3 the SNCF and RATP have preannounced a strike, so all rail and metro traffic will be affected.

We will be in Italy then and not back in France until June 8-12. It looks like no timeframe is safe from the possibility of a strike in France.

Truer words have not been spoken!

Right now there's no telling who will go on strike when, and how what things will be affected. Many other workers (particularly, in the context of FTers visiting Paris, museum workers) are striking in sympathy with the officially announced strikers, but OTOH some announced strikes end up not materializing.

My experience from this last weekend (May 24-27):

On Sunday the Orsay and Sainte Chappelle cathedral were closed due to the strikes. But the Pompidou Centre was open, even as strikers demonstrated right outside it. Notre Dame was open, too, but perhaps the Catholic Church is immune to such matters. Sainte Chappelle was back open on Monday.

On Tuesday the rail and subway workers were supposed to strike along with the air-traffic controllers, but in fact all the trains seemed to be running just fine. My CDG-ORD flight (UA 943), normally scheduled to depart at 11.20am, didn't depart until 5.30pm. At least the delay was established by the time I checked in, and we did in fact depart at 5.30 (and the RCC stayed open late). But other transcons left right on time that day. It seemed most if not all trans-Atlantic flights were operating with various lengths of delay.

My delay allowed me to go back into the city for a few more hours... but the Orsay was closed due to a strike again.

If you're going to Paris anytime soon, you definitely want to be flexible. There's no telling what will and won't be flying until the day of the flight, but flight delays and cancellations seem to be established somewhat firmly, so calling ahead could prevent one from getting to the airport needlessly early.
