From the IB Admin - YesLiberia!
This is of course a very salesy post, but I've recently been volunteering my communications skills over at an organization called YesLiberia (Youth Empowerment Services), an education charity in one of the 10 poorest nations in the world. We run 4 main programs:
***This is not tied to IB at all. I do this entirely outside my job.
- Generosity Bus - Most child deaths in the country come from traffic collisions as students walk to school
- Educational Leadership Trips - Many students, especially in rural areas, lack opportunities to experience real world working environments. These allow them to see and connect with professionals to better their odds.
- Scholarships - Liberia is so poor that $100 can fund a year of school for a student. This was the one that I most connected with. An ordinary person in a developed nation could literally change a kid's life.
- Reshaping Memories - During the civil wars, many women did not get a chance to take wedding photos or lost them. This program aids in repairing emotional scars and building confidence in women in a region still rife with gender inequality.
