New tramway to HEL airport

City council has last night approved the plan to build a tramway to Vantaa. The line will terminate at HEL and is expected to open at the end of the decade.

This will be very interesting for the hopeful foreign passengers eagerly jumping on the tramway only to find out it connects nowhere. Existing train connection to Tikkurila will be much faster.

Could be useful in case of train driver strikes though.

What do you mean? The tram will go to such exciting places as Hakunila and Länsimäki. Plenty of experiences available.

(On a more serious note, a public transport connection to Jumbo will probably be appreciated by some transit pax with long layovers. Other than that, the tram will serve people working at the airport.)

Yeah the connection to Jumbo seems stands out as the most beneficial in my situation. I could stop there after a trip before heading to Tikkurila and back to the sticks when I need to do some shopping that can't be accomplished at Tokmanni here in town😂

If it has a good schedule we foreigners will jump on it and go to Clarion Aviapolis - that's all we need!

Use the free bus to/from the holiday inn, which is less than five mins walk to Jumbo.

– 40 vuoden päästä tällä teknologiselle kehityksellä meillä on vähintään Teslan tekoälyllä toimivia lentäviä autoja ja muita hienoja antigravitaatiokulkuneuvoja.

"At this rate of technological development, within forty years' time we will have flying Tesla's running on artificial intelligence and other wonderful anti-gravitational means of transport," said Deghan.
Great, even AI will start weighing our grocery bags before we get in our cars.

But maybe it will be useful for people working at the airport, but not close to the train line.

The main reason for this tram is to provide intra-Vantaa transit, including Aviapolis. But once you have it until there, it would be plain stupid not building it up till the airport

Where is space for the station at airport end?
Isnt it quite full already, and for it to be viable, it needs to be fairly close to terminal.

Building a tramway isnt a small thing to do, just look at how long Raidejokeri has been built.

The current plan is that the tramway will elevate onto a "bridge" above Lentäjäntie and the terminus will be on top of the current bus terminal (see p. 28 of the plan).

Ah yes, didnt read that far first.

This bridge over Lentäjäntie and busterminal sound real easy on paper, but most of us know how small Lentäjäntie is for example. Building over existing road is no easy feat.

You could say exactly the same thing for the tram from Manchester airport when the train gets you to far away places much quicker. The tram is useful for workers or if you have a couple of hours at the airport and want to go shopping nearby but not go into the city centre.
