FlyerTalk Forums Expert How-Tos and Guides
Last edit by: intuition
Greetings from the editor-in-chief (a.k.a. The Chief Troll FFlash):
This WIKI intends to help understand the slang at Finnair Forum where you see misplaced words, funny meanings and weird context-specific expressions, sometimes even in Finnish.
NOTE: this is not a complete collection AND this tutorial is also written with a blink of an eye, so that even some tutorial slang here might need a tutorial of its own so don't take these too serious but rather as pastime and a pointer to understand the (mostly) finnish humor, sarcasm, irony and self-judgment related to Finnair / Finnish-ism.
Feel free to edit, anyone.

Adios = The farewell present from departing CEO, also known as the loyalty currency of a new spend based system. For some posters it also reflects the discouraging effect the new program has on frequent flying.

Anssi = a (ex-)marketing face for Finnair. The one on the flight safety monitors who you look and listen and don’t know what to think.

App = Finnair smartphone interface…nerve-cracking example of a bad UX design.

Aunties = covid-haunts checking you are good to go and spread coronavirus elsewhere than Finland

AY = Finnair

Based on customer feedback = A way to present a negative change that was decided in Finnair HQ, purely for the sake cost cutting. Is now used colloquially by FT'er combined with Nordic style irony. "Based on customer feedback, my grandmother got Covid the other day". The expression works particularly well with other Finnair white-washing terms (see "sustainable") for a "classic" announcement. (see also "customers have asked/requested")

BKML = Burger King special MeaL. Order it at the local fastfood restaurant before departing in order to have a high quality meal onboard FInnair. Occasionally resorted to as well, when the neighbouring lounge cannot keep to their standards.

(All B-letter slang below have a notation to down-under friend. A deeper understanding will require an exhaustive read of an own thread about said friend, easily found and worth reading)
Berlin = a famous airport not combinable with Rovaniemi and BNE on a single PNR

Businetic - people who board early and then disappear. Origin of the word is from the thread about Berlin, bikeys and alike.

Bikeys - passengers who don’t like Aussies sitting next to them. Context-related wording. See more in the thread about a famous Aussie.

Bounce(s) = Segments on AY itineraries, especially ex-BNE.

C = usually refers to business class, but at AY Forum business class is denoted with J most often. C normally refers to the terminal of TXL where Finnair flights have moved (obsolete), also known as the “barn”.

Catpiss = some weird yellowish liquid that AY contracted to serve as champagne, but luckily lately switched back to JP.

Customers have asked/requested = AY boilerplate phrase for any sustainabilized service unit, usually denoting the opposite voice of the customer.

Dear friend = an occasional FT’er who shows up on AY forum, oftentimes every no and then between 3 years when flying econometric to Berlin and Rovaniemi. Search tools will prompt with keywords such as citro, madraskim and a few more.

Delhi = a MR airport where some sombrero wearing idiots are offered special services

Delhi-belly = when true Delhi MR goes bad

EC261 claim = does not exist on AY vocabulary. The modern way of pissing into customer's eye and say NO.

Erika = an invisible spouse that comes handy when ordering free drinks

Fart cage = the new longhaul J cabin configuration with the new "lounge seat" concept, which allows for a good sleep with a warm pillowed immersed in fart odour of the previous luxury flyer.

Famous one = OH-LGG (note: does not refer to an aircraft nomination, but instead a lovely FT member here)

Forenom = mile pervert buys a Business Class ticket for a long haul flight and when the connection in HEL is not working, this traveller is going to save money and goes to Forenom hostel @hel and tries to sleep with polish workers there and at 6AM waiting in line for a shower.

Free drink = a series of events onboard where OWE pax observe FA play very Finnish service, style varies: “you are those platinum members, so you can have a drink just water please”, or “12€ please erhm, I am a platinum member oh, really? Here you are then” etc.

GT = Napue, interchangably (updated to something else these days)

HEL = Finnair’s home airport. Used to be seraphically simple to transfer at, but getting devilishly difficult to navigate nowadays between all the shopping hell. 2023 onwards getting even more shopped.

Höpö-höpö = “nonsense” as direct translation. In reality, very very serious talk and hence the most popular thread for chatter.

Idiot = a FT’er who flies without purpose of travel, just for fun (oftentimes also Pervert)

J = generally refers to business class.

JP = Joseph Perrier champagne. Successor of NF and later switched to catpiss, and most lately back to JP again. No longer available in SH J starting Apr 2023

Jorma = casual, average Finnish non-FF traveller from the street. Smarter than an Idiot though. And less Pervert than his name entitles (be careful about NOT using "Jorma" in a wrong, more grotesk context in Finland)

Kaljahattu = ”beerhat”, some idiots from this forum wearing a hat resembling 🍺, going on a leisurelarry or idiotic trip

Kalsarikänni(t) = trying to mimick this icon/picture here -> # alone at home. The pervert action mode in lounges for all perverts.

Katotaan(-concept) = an event onboard (usually business class widebody), where passenger is asking for service (normally drinks), but cabin crew is nonchalant about accommodating the requested service

Karjavankkuri = Non-minicabin configured 333's and 359's. Think of a Wells&Fargo superloadfactor-cart. Updated: replaced with Fart cage.

Karvalakki = Finnair A32B aircraft. Also known as ”Scandic of the skies”

Koristeluraappa = kitchenware. Used to finish and form e.g. a cream topping on a cake. The true nature and context on AY forum can only be understood by either owning one koristeluraappa, or reading the whole thread about it.

Korkealaatuinen ateriakokonaisuus = Finnair marketing slogan about high quality culinary full multi-course meal onboard business class. In reality, the term has turned out to be the most referred topic amongst FT'ers discussing AY onboard meals which are anything between Alepa-stocked plastic items on a single tray, to inedible overcooked reindeer. Or "riistaleipä".

Krista/Sanna = worlds most famous female ministers and thus most trusted and respected in covid matters of Finland. Mostly harmful.

Kultsi = a Finnair Plus Gold member

Lifetime Gold/Platinum = mission impossible on AY, exists only in some rare talks here but nothing to think about.

Loundge = a privileged (accessible for OWE+OWS members) cramped corner at HEL airport which is always crowded, where they serve inedible food. Also known as Finnair Lounge, or lately as TopiLounge, VegeLounge and the like.

Lumotic - An idiot gone insane. Devotes all spare time to fly 150 sectors. sometimes erroneously referred to as Lunatics, but shall not be mixed, since Lumotics are determined for a target while Lunatics only dream.

Marsuhäkki = Newer versions of the Finnair widebody A350 aircraft have minicabin removed and replaced with Y seating. Versions LWI-LWL have this config, a.k.a. marsuhäkki

MR = Mileage Run

MT = Mass Tourism. Refers to a badly designed MR where someone tries to make a fun MR more fun by adding overnight(s) at destination

Napue = world’s best Gin. The only one for true AY members. Other brands not considered.

NF = Nicolas Feuillatte. Replaced now with Joseph Perrier.

Offer = most probably an advertised 1000€ range business class ticket sale from HEL to MUC. Nowadays even 10.000€ range longhaul pricing.

Ole-mail = a message of bad news wrapped in exuberant language. It's like when your French aunt came to your birthday - making a big entrance and lots of hugs and kisses but all you got was a pair of pink socks when you wanted a computer game.

Pervert = a FT’er who flies to gather FF miles, just for fun (oftentimes also Idiot)

Platsku = a Finnair Platinum black card holder ( OWE)

Platskulehti = free onboard daily paper entitled for Platinum members when the FA is on good humor. Not existing anymore onboard, bring your own Private.

Pleb = "high-end" pleb: platinum Lumo who earned it via segments, contrary to real Lumo who flies long haul J. Plebs can expect waitlists that only clear after you nag CS extensively. "low-end" pleb: whoever you want to name with sympathy or empathy. The difference between high-end and low-end is invisible, you make it up.

Plebium wing: Gates 5-11, Where Pleb starts and ends their trips on ATR, far as can be from whatever AY pax might wanna go to. See also Pleb, as to why.

QR = Qatar Airways. A welcomed rival to AY in HEL.

Riistaleipä = a bread with game toppings, as direct translation. In fact, I don't know what it is, neither as bread nor translation. When you are served it, rest assured you will neither know what it is. Coincides with "korkealaatuinen ateriakokonaisuus" however. Riistaleipä seems though to have been sustainabilized, update(!)

Rovaniemi = a famous airport not combinable with Berlin on a single PNR

Rääppiäiset - AY's catering department cleaning out the pantry and neither J pax or crew have a clue about what's being served.

Salad = edible liquid salad product typically made of barley or wheat, known commonly as beer.
Green salad = Tuborg salad
Fruit salad = grape based salad, sparkling or not.
Dark salad = Amarula salad
No salad = a problem

Service Desk = No Service Desk(NSD) = interchangeable synonyms for AY Plat desk at HEL which doesn't actually serve you. Expect scoffs and eye-rolls

Snow-how = Finavia (HEL airport operator&owner) buzzword for their incompetence to deliver their winter marketing promises

Sparkling wine = not served on AY. Shall not be confused with true Champagne that AY serves. As of Apr 2023 true champagne is history in SH J.

Sustainable/sustainability = any measure AY takes which correlates with the rage of frequent fliers to the nonsense wording it is published with, such as when your three-course meal with four main course choices turns into a cold chicken salad in longhaul J and AY says it's an improvement that customers have wished for, or bus replacements that customers have asked for to reduce their CO2 footprint, and alike. See also veggie vomit.

Towel(s) = something you need to wear when you are visiting the sauna at Finnair Premium lounge in HEL. A bold attempt to fetch drinks from the lounge without wearing a tower will merit an honor at AY forum.

TopiLounge = Finnair non-Schengen premium lounge at HEL, also known as ”the lounge that is open by guess”.

TKU = a three-letter sacrifice for the altar of sustainability, for the few cursed known as a 2 hour bus torture ride west of Helsinki, which, Helsinkians think is only a one-way highway.

Upgrade = the most valuable AY+ elite perk, while the most controversial at the same time. Nothing to think about when it comes as an “exlusive” offer by SMS or email to your phone. See also Upgrade Voucher.

Upgrade Voucher = the new anti-climax of Upgrade. A broken instrument which used to signing beauty but has become an AY seiren that lures you into the heavenly businessclass haven but spoils your life once you get closer to it and crash.

Vege vomit, veggie/veggy vomit = standard AY loundge offering. Enhanced "meat"balls, based on sustainable cows. Sustainability has been suspected as the driver here.

Vyölaukku = fanny-pack, vyölaukkuturisti = a Finnish holiday traveller. However, if spotted wearing also a sombrero, then it is a famous travel hacker

Wing = could be that thing that holds the aircraft in the air, but most people might think it refers to HEL airport section. However, forum members think of it as a good lounge in eastern part of globe (HKG).

Viinaa menee niin paljon = Poor excuse of winter seasonal AY 7 and AY 5 featuring single-tray concept due to lots of liquor being consumed according to FA.

Viinaa ei mene enää = covid-based excuse for AY’s fake undertakings

X = award seat that suddenly comes very handy with AY points

U = supposed business class award seat, in reality the Unavailable class.

Y = economy cabin/class. The one that the seasoned AY members talk a lot about since they fear it so much that it is all about avoiding it.

Zodiac = the business class seat on AY’s A350 aircraft that the loyal AY members hate

Åbo = the small airport between MHQ and HEL, known as TKU (see above).

Äijät juo kaljaa = a Finnair DO / meetup

58Ö = back of the bus. Seat in the last row of economy cabin. More of a sympathizing connotation.

Lumo Limo is the real deal - car transfer between plane and gate for those super-tier Lumonatics.

But I think the term can also be used ironically as in Lumonatic to gate agent conversation:
- Ah, I see my Lumo Limo s ready!
when a jam-packed diesel bus from the 90's if waiting for him/her to squeeze onboard as the 112.th passenger.

Indeed. As a low point lumo I only get the public transport while those segment lumos seem to get all the nice things. #firstClassProblems

I appreciate the info. Looking forward to my first AY experience 18Oct LHR > HEL > BKK. 28 Oct SIN > HEL > ORD. The A350 should be great. I’ve been in the HEL (non) lounge years ago, which I thought was great. Looking forward to the new. Scouring to grab the AY lingo.

If I understood correctly, it's not the Plat desk but the general service desk (that is open for everyone but serves no one )

Especially now, as with all the virus problems, disinfection is really a must!

It's not like the Plat desk is willing to serve either based on previous reports.

The parts about Berlin and Rovaniemi piqued my interest, so I searched older posts.
Well, that was an interesting waste of time...

Wow, did you find our Dear Friend?
So you got lesson about basic businetics which teaches that it is not very econometric to fly bikey class to txl via rvn from bne.

I’m planning to go to Australia once this current craziness dies down, but for the sake of my own sanity, I won’t be flying in or out of Brisbane. I would never be able to handle several hours stuck on a plane next to someone like that.

It's likely you'll end up next to her on the HEL-SIN and HEL-HKG bounces.
