Was actually able to make this change. Had to pay the fare difference though

You haven't been proven wrong yet as I didn't actually go through with the change.

Thanks for trying to help, regardless.

Yeah, my understanding is that a Classic ticket allows date changes, with the fare difference being paid, but no route changes. If you got an agent that promised you a route change, you should probably have taken advantage of it right there and then (and it may or may not have gone through in the end). But if I were you, I would not count on this being possible when you call next time and get a different agent.

As AY and AA are interlining partners and we have upcoming on separate tix FRA-HEL-DFW and DFW-ANC:
how high are the chances they check it through?
Or do we have to check it in after picking up (point of entry) right at an AA counter - which is hopefully there and don't have to exit security?

Finnair has the policy of not checking through on separate tickets (regardless of interline agreements).
This policy came about several years ago, when the alliance made some kind of joint effort in this area. Some airlines have since then backtracked (CX, QR IIRC) but Finnair is adamant. Of course, YMMV like always.

Finnair through check-in policy

Passenger and baggage shall be through checked to the final destination as indicated by the flight ticket, provided it constitutes one single agreement of carriage with Finnair. Finnair will provide through check-in for a journey ticketed in a single PNR; this includes segments ticketed separately but booked in the same PNR (and/or referenced in a single PNR during the time of booking).

In addition to the basic rule Finnair will allow through check-in of customer and baggage with separate tickets on separate PNRs on AY–AY (including AY franchising flights operated by Norra) connections when the transfer is within the Minimum Connection Time (MCT). For AY–AY connection flights on the separate PNRs have to be both marketed and operated by Finnair or Norra and flights ticketed on the 105-stock. The agent shall always inform the customer of the destination where the customer and his or her baggage are checked-in to.

You end landside if you take the transfer way.

It's still landside. The passage after the baggage re-check (for through-checked bags) is connected to a normal security checkpoint that is landside.

Approx. 4 hours before.

Tell Twitter that AY recommends Y pax to appear at the desk 3 hours before the flight.

If I'm flying HEL-BKK with AY and BKK-HKT with Bangkok Airlines, can I check my luggage from HEL all the way to HKT? The tickets are two different bookings.

Per above posted policy: No

On separate tickets, Finnair only through checks if both airlines are "their own".
