OK. Full Y pricing is horrendous. i cant understand why they do that, but perhaps there is someing in your original fare rules.

Yeah, without the exact rules from the ticket receipt, stating why the pricing fail may be presumptuous.

Did you try calling the US customer service?

I called both US and Finland CS. I have the rules and they were confirmed by cs agent. Change of date permitted with a difference in fare and change fee.

US based cs was not able to quote the change price at all. Instead they sent a request back to hq and promised a reply in 24 hours (never received)

Write a short message explaining the problem (with quote from the fare rules) to Finnair's Facebook page. Sometimes going via social media seems to work. And it works better, if you appear calm and matter-of-fact, like you are here.

They still haven't replied to a much simpler issue on FB, I doubt anything useful will come from it.

Honestly, given how unresponsive their customer service is (I had to wait on hold for 30 minutes to get both US and Finland based agent every time I called) - I am a bit reluctant to put any more effort into dealing with AY.

The specific issue has been solved, I have different tickets, money paid to AY will be counted as a "learning experience fee".

Perhaps this thread may be useful as a note of caution to others.

Current fares might be completely irrelevant in your case because many airlines (including Finnair) have included to most fares a clause stating

WHEN THE FIRST FARE COMPONENT IS CHANGED CURRENT
FARES VALID AT THE TIME OF REISSUE MUST BE USED.
OTHERWISE HISTORICAL FARES VALID AT THE TIME OF
ISSUANCE OF PREVIOUS TICKET MUST BE USED
.

In some cases date change might require repricing of flown fare component (if original maximum stay is exceeded, original fare doesn't allow open-jaws etc). My guess is that some restriction of the original fare isn't fulfilled as a result Y (or B,H) booking class is used regardless of availability.

As you I would try contacting Facebook / Twitter team as first step. Writing a polite message is much easier than spending an hour on the phone.

I have spoken to a number of CS reps. This does not appear to follow the "historical fares" rule. Historical fares would have been even lower, and there are no restrictions on original fare that would have disqualified it from the requested date change.

Combining the pieces of information together, here is what I've got:
- Rules, as shown online, are not complete. There are "additional rules" somewhere out there that Finnair can use but won't send me (I didn't dig much deeper into that).

- Changes after first segment is flown are not repriced as changes but rather as *upgrades* (so state the rules not available to me but visible to CS). I.e. they are always repriced to another higher fare (though how the higher fare is selected I was not explained), even if cheaper fare is available.

- By "upgrades" they seem to mean full fare Y, hence the extremely high price.

None of this would have been an issue if at purchase the "change rules" statement said so clearly. As it stands, I feel that their pricing practice is fairly deceptive.

The specific issue at hand was solved by buying a one-way ticket on AA that takes me where I need to go. The total price is about what I'd expect to pay for a reasonably-priced change on AY, so all in all it worked ok and there is no longer a need to talk to them.

FWIW I am in the process of switching "allegiance" from *A to OneWorld. AY was going to be a big part of that with their routes to Asia. But given the current experience (and the change policy that is not acceptable for practical reasons - I do change tickets from time to time), AY is no longer under consideration. This year I've spent a about $8K on AY tickets (not just for myself, though). Granted, it's not much. That said, the only way I can influence things is by taking my business where I get the desired result for my money - and AY is not it, unfortunately.

I remember earlier this year a case where I asked if I can change my return to HEL from Hamburg instead of Berlin, and they told me it is only possible so that they need to upgrade my return (low-economy class I don't remember which) leg to a full-flex Y ticket and the price jumped so high that I ended up buying a new roundtrip ticket.

br2k, this is highly disturbing and something we all need to learn something from.

There are two things to note with AY fare rules:
Firstly, the "published fare rules are not complete" issue. This is a known issue when booking with AY. They first present some rules expressed in marketing speach. There is a "show the rules" link, but even this does not show the complete rules.
Other airlines are happy to show all the rules, but I think AY won't change unless someone either takes them to court for false marketing or makes a big fuzz in local media.


Secondly, AY has made a lot of changes latley. They have joined the TATL joint venture (and the Japan JV) where they have had to align fare rules with others - this is quite frankly a mess. AY have ( had to ) adopted rules from other carrires standard package and this makes rules very inconsistent depending on destination. It is like there is 3 different AYs now when it comes to how the basic fare rules work. One TATL, one Japan and one the rest.
Also, new revenue management have had a go at their basic rules to spur up some revenue. IMHO, this is a mess too. Having many sets of rules makes it even more important to at least clearly state the rules before purchase.


Anyway, enough of my opinions. I did manage to dig up a complete rules for a JFK-PVG trip in O. As I don't know the dates and POS and other things about your trip, we can't be sure these are the exact rules your ticket was under. AY most certainly knows, and they shouldn't refuse to send you a copy.

Here is the penalties section for OLXECOUS valid for O ticket on NYC-SHA (AY uses city pairs and not airports in rules) in october. YMMV

It kind of explains the "we need to upgrade your ticket to Y before changing it". I have bolded two rules

I'm no master in reading fare rules, but to me it says "any changes after take off is not a change" and "only a date&time change is regarded as a change".
So I read this as your first try (the date change) would have been allowed at nominal fee if it had been done before take off. The second sugested change would not have allowed at all.
It might be that when a customer asks for a change not allowed by the rules, the AY SOP is to elevate the ticket to Y (which allows pretty much anything) and then expedite the desired changes.

Sounds quite similar.

They should really make that clear in ticket conditions description during booking. IMHO that's de-facto equivalent to "no changes after departure". I still wouldn't fly with them this trip based on that information, but might have picked them for another one. Deceptive practices are a no-go though.

I assume, they are going about it like this: The asked change is not allowed. Instead of saying "Not allowed" to customer, they do try to make the change happen, which only can be done if ticket first is altered into a fully flexible Y ticket. But again, I'm no master in fare rules.
