PS. Totally off the point, but I've just realised that I have to pay Apple $99 per year to have ads running on Apple News. Yup, I pay them instead of them paying me! This is because I need to be registered as an app developer (even though I am not) to access the Apple payment portal. Seems a bit of an own goal given that, given the underperformance of Apple News, I'm not sure I'd make a lot more than $99 back. |

Anyone else read Boarding Area on the Apple news app? It comes up as "Frequent Flyer" for category (the only other one to show up is TPG) and it's the only way I read bloggers now. Unfortunately actual respectable bloggers (Doctor of Credit, for example) aren't on it, and there's always this one entitled scumbag Canadian on BA that comes up .....ing about everything...
https://apple.news/T7D5BAb_WT-2SPjYeW1rOuw I have no clue what the category is. Maybe I should look into that. But to Raffles' point, I don't think advertising is the goal. Just making sure people have another way to read it if they want to. It's pretty easy for anyone with an RSS feed and a logo to set up on Apple News for free if you don't care about the ads. |
The logo was a pain, actually! Apple has very strict standards as to how the logo is done. My designer had to redo it a couple of times before they accepted it.
I agree re ad revenue to an extent. However, as you know, unless you have major card links, monetising a blog involves making a little bit of money from a lot of different sources - and Apple News should be one of those, I think. |
Couldn't agree more with your last sentence. Drip drip drip!

10 years of "The Gate," which also means 10 years of Boarding Area readers being forced to see Brian's looming, slightly smug face every time we open the page. |

I'm sure he's a wonderful person, but that photo/banner still bugs the crap out of me. It's entirely gratuitous. I'm sure he doesn't care what I think, but Brian, if you're reading, maybe consider changing it to something else?

He is a really nice guy as others have said. |

Echoing the good things about Brian. He's a champ
|
And I'll take it one small step further, I appreciate that he is almost entirely grammatically and spelling error-free.
I can appreciate that, a lot. |

His blog seems to be the most blant and boring, a quick scan finds posts about "how to wash your hands" etc. Amazing. Zero comments anywhere so I assume his readership is non-existing. And he keeps displaying his selfie which to me is the contradiction to being "anything but smug in real life". |
I think Brian writes the way most on this board seem to be asking for: without grammar errors, without click-bait titles, no credit card pimping or anything like that, simply an informed person writing about things that he thinks will interest his readers (and he has plenty of readers, I promise).
New-school blogging uses click-bait titles and a different style of grammar (short, fragmented sentences) that emphasizes readability over substance. Brian's more old school, which I find very refreshing. |

I did expect a response, but I didn't expect to be made famous in a blog post :) |
