Oktoberfest Munich
I'm going to Oktoberfest this year 9/30 - 10/2 (30.9 - 2.10 for you Europeans) and I need information on purchasing tickets/reservations to sit in one of the beer tents. I need two for 30th and two for the 1st. I guess I'd like to know the easiest way for someone in the US to purchase tickets ahead of time without getting totally gouged. Any ideas? I'd especially like reservations for Augustiner.

I am going to Oktoberfest for the first time this year as well (9/25-26) - our reservations were purchased by a friend of a friend who lives in Frankfurt. Our package was EUR 98/pp and includes seats at a table in the Hofbrau tent, one night hotel, breakfast, vouchers for food and 2L of beer, a Munich guidebook, and an "Oktoberfest hat" (whatever that is). We booked this in March. Unfortunately I don't know where he went through to get the reservations.
If you don't need hotel or a package, I believe the only way to get a reservation for seats in the tents is to contact the individual tent directly - see the Augustiner portion of the official Oktoberfest website here for contact info. Some of the tents have websites but I don't see one for Augustiner. For example, the Hofbrau site shows what dates and times are free and then you can book by fax.

You'll look like a real Bavarian...
(Sorry, couldn't resist...)
No worries, these hats are very popular during Oktoberfest, many people will be running around wearing them. Anyway, they're useful for carneval, "fancy hat parties" and occasions like that later on, so take yours home!

in my experience a party of two will never have problems getting into the tents that are primarily frequented by the non-locals, ie. augustiner etc. the problem arises if you are part of a large group or want to enter one of the "in"-tents in the late afternoon and evening.
