Getting to Dundee?
I am thinking of going to a meeting in Dundee, Scotland next summer. I will be flying from California, usually SJC. I might want to use or earn miles on United or American but that would be secondary to convenience.
I am not sure what city to fly into and then how to get to Dundee. There are apparently trains from Edinbourgh and Glasgow but I don't know about getting from airport to train or length of journey.
There is air service from London City Airport and I have no idea where that is or what airport I would fly in to if I were to chose that option.
And as long as I'm asking questions, how many days would I want to add on to see the area in day trips from wherever I am staying in Dundee.
The meeting may be at the University; the announcement doesn't specify. Any favorite inns or B&B's or other places to stay that would be convenient walknig distance or a quic bus ride?

Yes, you can indeed fly from London City Airport, and this is probably your easiest option. The airport has a very good web site with instructions on how to get there etc - you can find it here .
Flights to Dundee are operated by Scot Airways

I'm guessing there's not an appreciable difference in getting to a hotel from the airport or the train station in Dundee.
Thanks for the link. Is taking those trains from LHR or Gatwick to London City really easier than flying on to EDI or GLA and then taking a train?
I usually have a 24", an 18" and a soft cabin bag which do all hook together into one unit and wheel, but ...

Your choice is between a one-hour journey from LHR or LGW to LCY followed by a one-hour flight, or a flight from LHR or LGW to GLA or EDI followed by a bus a taxi ride into town followed by a one-and-a-half hour train journey. I think a lot will depend on actual connection times.

I actually like flying into GLA directly. AA flies in the summer from ORD. CO has service into EDI now from EWR. At GLA you can take a local shuttle to a local train into the city where you would have to change trains to go from Central to Queens St. Station. Easiest would be to take a taxi - 20 minutes - directly to Queens St. At EDI there is bus to the main station or taxi....again about 20 minutes.
Train from Edinburgh to Dundee is a tad over an hour while Glasgow is a tad over 90 minutes. Service was hourly when I was there. Train station in Dundee is south of town. Airport is west and not as close but not far at all. As for hotel there is an old Stakis that is now in the Hilton chain. It works.

Thanks. Yes, I agree that from SJC to GLA looks easiest (and I am AA Platinum) so an award or double miles would be part of the mix too) and I have quite a few Hilton points so that hotel sounds worth considering. It's Category 2, but rated 4 star, and today's prices range from $176 - $287!
I am late if I am going to try for air and hotel awards. I will need to make up my mind!
I appreciate the suggestions.
Ideas about other things to do in Dundee? Day trips to add on? I think I would want to just sleep at the one hotel.
