If you are still with car, look into Gattinara, a small wine town about 20-30 km to the northwest, and an easy drive to MXP. We stayed in the Tre Scallani(sp?)(Three Steps) and also ate there about a half a dozen times. Drove over to Spanna (about 5km) to some wine cellar. Walked in the vineyards & drank wine.

If you eat there, and are into wine, ask them to open one of their best bottles of Gattinara when they think best. Usually 5-10 hours before consuming.

Tre Scallani is about a 1* place, but clean, quiet, and very inexpensive.

I arrived at MXP last August and, because the airport facility that Continental Airlines uses as an Arrivals lounge was closed, CO provided me with use of a room at the Villa Malpensa which is just off the Terminal One access road. Because I was only there for a couple of hours, I can't give a detailed evaluation, but here's the Villa's website plus a "review" posted to Trip Advisor by a previous guest:

I'll have a car and need something reasonably close to MXP, but not city centre. A HI would be nice. Any ideas?

Stimpy, are you arriving with that car? If so, from where? If you are driving past Lugano, I would suggest spending the night there and continuing on to MXP the next day.
