Lightbulb Isolation & Solitude?

Hello friends ... an odd request ...

I will be arriving in Europe (specifically, Oslo, although I am not bound to this location, and in fact would prefer to transit elsewhere) at the end of this month for about 40 days. I am a writer and have been looking for a place to 'hole up' and get some significant work done (I am several err... months ... late on a deadline.)

- I'm looking for something relatively inexpensive (around $1500 USD)
- Require absolute privacy, quiet, and solitude -- I do not want to live in somebody's basement or in a setting where I will be bothered. I need to be alone with my own mind (does that sound crazy? )
- I do not mind roughing it; internet, running water, indoor toilet, electricity not essential
- Needs to be in some way accessible via public transit / walking
- Preferably within 5-10 miles of a grocery store
- Safe!

I have tried AirBNB, and there are some interesting options ... but nothing that entirely fits the bill.

Any suggestions? Thank you in advance for any advice you might have!

Norway is not a cheap country, although finding a cabin somewhere north this time of the year will leave you in isolation for sure
If you want something cheap, find a country house somewhere in Latvia, Lithuania or Estonia

Lake District possibly? Or Cornwall. Should be able to find a holiday cottage or something similar in the UK.

+1

Try Estonian Hiiumma island - been there in August. You will be on your own, with few light houses only. And WAY cheaper than Norway.

What about AirBnB where you can rent a whole place?

True, but climate-wise I would prefer to hole up in Alderney. Very quiet place.

Just happen to see this thread
I would consider the north of Spain; somewhere in Galicia
tons of small towns and you can rent a house all to yourself, cheap

Well, the first question that comes to my mind is why are you flying there if you would prefer to stay elsewhere? Is there some reason for flying there instead of say Spain or Greece or Turkey?

Second, you mention $1500 but don't say for what period of time. I could guess you mean for the entire 40 days but that might not be the case. Sloppy writing on your part in terms of communication to say the least. You don't even say what kind of dollars. Australian, Hong Kong, ?

I would suggest this. Look for a place that is a busy tourist destination but is now in the off-season. For example, almost any Greek island will have lots of vacation rentals sitting empty all winter. One of the more southern islands (Rhodes, Crete) could provide you with a quiet place to write at a very reasonable off-season price.

I'll even give you a personal suggestion for a property I am very familiar with.
http://www.ownersdirect.co.uk/greece/GR16.htm

Phone them directly and ask for a rate for 40 nights, it won't be the published rate if you book for that length of time.

Note, this is a LEGAL rental property, unlike many properties to be found in third party listing sites like Airbnb et al.
