Validity of a single entry Schengen visa

Hi guys

My first post here, though I have been scanning this occasionally. Find it extremely useful, so keep up the good work people!

I had a quick query.

I applied for and received a single entry schengen visa valid till the 05th of August 2013. I would be traveling to Vienna from the 18th to the 21st of july. So is it safe to assume that the visa has expired after I return to the UK?

I am asking because I am also travelling to Germany on the 1st of August and would need to reapply for a German schengen visa immediately after returning (would have loved a multiple entry visa, but didn't get it). Now the rule says that you cannot have 2 active visas on your passport at the same time.

Commonsense tells me that once a trip is completed, a single entry visa should lapse, irrespective of the validity date on it. But you know how it is with some of these things.

I am an Indian with a residence permit in the UK.
