Dress code Prague opera

Going to Operas in 3 weeks in Prague at both the State Opera House and the Prague National Theater. I prefer not to pack a suit for the trip. Can I get away with a sports jacket or nice sweater? This works in NYC and Paris.
Any restaurant suggestions near these theaters?

I've not been to the Prague houses, but I've been to most of the other Central and Western European houses. New production premiers are sometimes dressier than other nights (example Munich and Vienna), and some theaters have local rules (for example, the poltrona (orchestra seats) at La Scala).

With all that said, I never drag a suit along on my trips and have never felt out of place (my usual "uniform" is dark wool/blend slacks and solid black shirt). The older peope (50+) tend to dress up more, but you'll find all levels of dress across different age groups.

Obvious exceptions are places where dressing up is part of the experience, such as Glyndebourne.

No problem at the Prague Opera.

I would at least wear a shirt, and leave the jacket at cloakroom.

I'm female but got tickets at the last minute for an opera in Prague. I was there for just the weekend and hadn't packed anything very nice. I ended up buying a skirt and wore a knit top that I had and some lovely sandles. I was dressed fine. I saw men in all types of clothes.

Nice slacks, shirt and a sports jacket or sweater will be fine. Just don't wear sneakers

Sorry, that skirt length does NOTHING for my legs!

More seriously, in houses like these where a sizable number or the audience are tourists, my feeling is really saying "shorts, tee-shorts and other very informal wear probably aren't appropriate".

Add to that the fact that more and more people buy their tickets online - many people will not see the poster until they arrive the evening of the performance.

I hope that the OP will report back after the performances on what he/she saw, both on the stage and in the audience.

they'll let you in anyway if you are at least dressed "normally". However you will feel a lot better when dressed with a suit, as you might feel a bit underdressed without and the opera is certainly not a place to wear your sneakers.

If you want to avoid carrying a suit (which I understand because it really gets wrinkled all the time and it is a lot of effort to get it straignt again after the flight) you could at least consider wearing suit trousers and a shirt
