Copenhagen to Amsterdam through Germany - Hire Car
Hi All,
I am looking to travel from Copenhagen to Amsterdam through Germany by hire car, if possible. I want to take about three weeks to do the whole trip.
I have some questions that I can't seem to nail by Google. Maybe the good folks of this forum could help.
1. Could I rent a car in Denmark and drop it off in Amsterdam? I couldn't find a company that offers this service. Any ideas?
2. If the above is not possible, is a train trip encompassing Copenhagen, Hamburg, Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, Amsterdam a viable alternative? I'm looking for a bit of flexibility.
3. Any pro's/con's would be appreciated.
Thanks.
TKM

1. Try Europcar (I tried on the online webpage for a sample date in August 3 weeks and it came out to ~$1500 with one way charges)
2. http://www.bahn.de for searching train connections in Germany. http://www.eurail.com or http://www.raileurope.com for Denmark-Germany or just http://www.germanrailpasses.com for Germany is an option as well.

Look at http://www.hertz-transfer.de for international one-way hires.
The train is certainly doable - there is a Copenhagen-Hamburg ICE train (it gets loaded on to a ferry...) and plenty, very good high-speed services within Germany and on the Frankfurt-Amsterdam corridor.
Pros and cons - train is more relaxing and quicker over long distances, but car gives you the flexibility to go off route and stop off on the way. German cities are well set up with local public transport, so there's little advantage to having a car inside them for tourist purposes.

I know it's tempting to go for the major cities because they are the "household names"... but considering you have a fair bit of time why not do some research and find some smaller, lesser-known places to visit?
