I am thinking of heading to Crete at the end of the month. Do think the islands are affected at all? I'm guessing it's mostly Athens that is, and that it's business as usual elsewhere, but would be grateful if you could confirm or deny.

We are taking a cruise that stops in athens for 6 hours. We had planned to skip the cruise tour and do it on our own. I am now concerned that if something happens we could get strande. I want to go ahead and book the cruise tour. That way, if something happens the ship will have responibilty to get us back to the ship. My wife want's "do it on our own". Any thoughts or suggestions?

DIY is always best if you have a mind of your own. And if a strike is serious enough to affect your visit to Athens, it would affect it cruise tour or not. If the streets are blocked, they are blocked and the cruise company would have the same problems. Plus local taxis are always looking to make a buck so you shouldn't have a problem getting a ride somewhere. However you might want to read up on Athens taxi culture.

OK, I am leaving on our honeymoon next Friday. What is the status of travel in Greece?

We are headed to IST first and then on to Athens, Santorini, and Crete on the 25th.

Is anything happening in Greece that should make us worried?

My family arrived in Athens yesterday, and said things now appear calm, with no transport strikes so hopefully, things are back to normal now.

A bit OT, but since you mention IST, we were there in March and had a fabulous driver who took us around the sites and was a lot of fun. For folks that watch the Travel Channel, he is the driver Anthony Bourdain used on the IST show. I would highly recommend Issan and he can be contacted at www.besttaxidriver.com. A Greek islands honeymoon trip will be wonderful- Congratulations!

Hey Chex,

Looks like we'll be in Greece Together.. I leave on the 18th via FRA and hopefully arrive in Athens on the 20th--in the middle of their latest strike day.

I've talked to family/friends over there and they say its safe and to continue to come on over. If anything, the strikes are more of an inconvenience than safety issue for the tourists.

Be sure to keep the local/international numbers for your air carrier handy in case you have to rebook. While the strike has been announced on the 20th, my Air carrier (CO via LH codeshare) hasn't (and probably won't until the 20th) acknowledged it and isn't providing re booking options yet so the 20th should be an interesting day for me.

I am trying to find specific info about any strikes (who? when?), but not having much success.

This makes getting excited for honeymoon not easy.

Chexy, one of the keys to a great honeymoon is to roll with the changes. You will look back years from now and have fond memories of having things changed around by a strike or something. I seriously doubt that anything will affect your ability to enjoy yourselves on this trip.

Go to TripAdvisor Greece Forum.....they have experts "on the ground" in Greece and they have up to the minute posts on strikes and demonstrations......
