That is a very odd schedule. Arrive at SYD just before curfew starts = high risk of diversion or massive delay. Depart next morning just as curfew lifts = problem if inbound flight didn't make it or had to delay arrival until morning.

It is a risky schedule indeed.

Expect one of them to drop into MEL at least once every two weeks.

6am departure out of Sydney. Eeeek. Yuck. Wonder what the no-show factor will be. Apparently even on the SQ220 at 8am the no show factor is up there...

Conversely, that seems a good time to depart to me and will be top of my list for when I rebook my inbound flight to UK. Seems to be nicely timed to connect onewards from Dubai to London and gives a nice daytime service to UK

I wonder why they didn't do an early afternoon service... something like

Dep 1400
Arr 2145

A lot of flights leave DXB around that time to connect to Pakistan/Middle East and even India

Cheers,

Since 419 goes via BKK, it doesn't get into DXB till 0535, in time for the morning departure bank, and 7h 50m after a theoretical nonstop leaving at 1400 would arrive.

Cheers,

Would that mean that both flights would be in daylight the whole way (apart from the early morning Winter departure time in Sydney)?

I can see the attraction in that, especially if arriving into European ports just before bed-time.
My sort of flight.

Just found that there is only one direct Rome flight from DXB in the morning with no afternoon/evening departure - so this new service is not so useful as I first hoped.

Last edited by goback; Jun 20, 2009 at 11:38 pm Reason: Only one DXB-FCO flight per day.

In middle of southern winter it will still be dark at 06:00 but dawn would break not too far into the flight. It would then be daylight all the way to Dubai. Connecting on to London ( where I will be flying to) , arriving in at 8pm is perfect. It is the only daytime service to London that I am aware of. Normally I have to overnight en-route to get daytime services

On top of that, getting to SYD at that time of the morning has no traffic and I can leave safe in the knowledge of not having to allow time for traffic

Also, being one of the 1st 3 departures in the morning ( QF and DJ both have 06:00 deomestic departures) there is unlikely to be any delay getting to the runway with other aeroplanes departing

I couldn't agree with you more about the arrival time.
My colleagues often think me a little strange chasing daylight flights, including east bound TATL. I also used to fly on the Thursday (or was it Friday?) QF LAX SYD daylight-ish flight in the past.
For economy passengers it could be a bonus as well given that sleep in Y is near on impossible, but good seat selection and good IFE could help pass by the v.long day with the occassional siesta.

Another couple of bonus points about the departure time, pace Kiwi Flyer.

I suspect the timing is to do with slot availability at SYD - which other airline is gonna wanna depart or arrive at those times

And I suspect the burgeoning SYD-KHI market wasn't the first thing on EK's mind... It's great for connections to the afternoon bank of European departures

I saw a EK A380 take off from Sydney airport last monday morning, has Emirates started an A380 service to SYD or was it a test flight?

EK has been flying A380 to SYD (and AKL) since February 2009. Morning take-off is to AKL (DXB-SYD-AKL), evening is to DXB.
