As someone who was based in Abu Dhabi in 2005/6 I travelled on several occasions to Yemen. It made a very pleasant change from drab and dreary Abu Dhabi and Dubai which have none of the Arabic charm that was evident as recently as the early eighties. The Yemenis are wonderful and hospitable people and it is like stepping back in time wandering around the main souk of Sana'a. The climate is fantastic and the scenery is wonderful. One word of caution - the security situation is still not very positive and I would not venture beyond Sana'a even with a local guide. Aden was a huge disappointment so stick with Sana'a. There is plenty to see and photograph there. The arrival into Sana'a can be quite hair raising as the city is in a valley surrounded on three sides by mountains and even the larger jets get buffeted around. On one occasion our pilot aborted a landing twice, just feet from the ground with one wingtip almost touching the ground as he wrestled with the conditions. It was certainly white knuckle stuff until he did an ILS approach with the wind with plenty of foot on the brakes. That was with Yemenia but I know EK pilots have the same issues.
