Why is there such a cost difference based on origin?!?

Yes. That is correct. I usually have taken one way to Mumbai and then start my journey from Bom - DXb - SFO - DXB - BOM and it works out much cheaper. Thats the only way around it - go one way and start your journey from the place where it works out cheaper.
