Standby upgrades
I saw in a thread that it's possible to buy an upgrade at check-in or on board, but no information about how to do this. I'm flying AKL-SYD on Friday and would prefer the extra space

Yes you can do that, but expect weird fares differences.
Last trip I had, BKK-SYD, I asked for an upgrade and was quoted $2800US, while for the DXB-BKK leg was $529US.
If you're silver/gold member you could use your miles at check-in and onboard. But it would be good to make use from the chauffeur drive by upgrading in advance

Does anyone have experience upgrading at check-in from DXB to a European city? I got quoted around 300 for a VIE-DXB in 2006 which wasn't bad for a 6 hr flight (no ICE or new J though).
